105th Millrose Games - Lagat, Lalang & Cheserek Set Records in NB Men's 5000m Run

A sensational race came through with new American, NCAA and high school records. Bernard Lagat showed his trademark savvy, controlling the pace from the halfway point. University of Arizona teammates Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu hung close as the trio passed 3000 (7:55) and 4000 (10:33) comfortably. A strong kick brought him home first, setting a U.S. record 13:07.15. Lalang (13:08.28) was rewarded with a collegiate record. Running back in the back, Kenyan native Edward Cheserek of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, NJ, became the first high school runner to break 14:00, finishing eighth in 13:57.04.

Comments

  1. wtf how do they overlap each other if they go single line
  2. I ran at the New Balance games before in my sophmore year of track, didn't place or anything but it sure was an amazing experience seeing the speed and dedication these people put into their sport. Even got lucky enough to see the U.S. 500m record beaten
  3. Being the greatest runner isn't about having the fastest PR. It's about finishing 1st in a race. In championship races, it's more about tactics and big kicks than having the fastest PR. Webb has the American record, which is impressive, but he ran it in a small meet with some pacers and no competition. In a head to head race, my money is on Lagat. Running races is about beating your opponent; it isn't a purely individual sport.
  4. The thing that's great about running is there are no shades of gray. Alan Webb is the fastest American to EVER run the mile which does make him the best. Now as far as being a better competitor there's no question Lagat would have his scalp on a silver platter 8.5 (just a good percentage, Webb has beaten Lagat before) times out of 10
  5. 3 american records now held by 3 kenyans
  6. He has the American record but he isn't the best American miler. Ask yourself, who would you rather have running for the USA? Webb who chokes in major races or Lagat who has had a long and lustrous career? That's what I thought.
  7. Allen Webb HOLDS the American record for the mile. But that's pretty much it.
  8. He's great when he has pace setters, but he isn't good in strategic races and he can't pull up a 50 second last lap at the end of a mile like Lagat could.
  9. Allen Webb is still the best American Miler
  10. yo GALEN RUPP IS THE FUTURE
  11. 14:18...what the hell hahahaha - that's stupid fast
  12. poor ben bruce
  13. Lagat is amazing, but he had the misfortune to be a miler at the same time as el Guerrouj
  14. Cheserek was the first to break 14 indoors...
  15. No cheserek is not 17
  16. Cheserek is so old it stupid, hes 2 years older than me and im in the same grade, he shouldnt be able to run next near. also the description is definitely wrong, he is not the first high school runner to break 14, rupp and ritz have smashed those times
  17. cheserek would be much more impressive if he were actually the age of an average junior..or senior as of next yr. He obviously runs amazing times for a high school junior, but they arent as amazing when you consider that he could actually be a college freshman.
  18. no seriously, he is 19. His birthday was in the winter.....watch one of his interviews. "you're a fucking idiot"
  19. You're a fucking idiot. Cheserek is only 17 and doesn't turn 18 until next year.
  20. @akidd2013 senior year for cheserek: sub-4 lol
