12 BIGGEST Insects

The Goliath Beetle is a huge bug and is often considered one of the contenders for largest insects on Earth. Goliaths can grow over 4 inches tall and weigh as much as 50 grams. They’re actually even bigger before they’re fully matured. In their larval state, a Goliath Larva can eat until it reaches weights of 100 grams and can be nearly 10 inches in length! A Goliath Grub is a big meaty baby beetle with a monstrous appetite. It craves high amounts of protein, which is unusual for this kind of bug and will eat until it's ready to pupate into it’s more familiar and a little less gross beetle form. Giant Burrowing Cockroaches are the big jock brothers of your regular sized cockroach. These big dudes are the heaviest cockroaches in the world and grow over 3 inches long. Although they look a little scary, they’re not actually considered a pest like most cockroaches. In fact, a lot of people like to keep them around as pets. This puck sized bugs can live up to 10 years and apparently, be your new best friend. Giant Water Bugs have come to have multiple nicknames including toe-biters and alligator ticks. Unfortunately, these nicknames are appropriate for this violent little dude. Giant Water bugs are known to grow as big as four inches and live in streams and ponds. They hide in underwater vegetation and then snatch up prey and inject them with a poisonous digestive enzyme that turns the insides of their catch into a liquid for them to drink up. It's like the world’s grossest protein shake. Their usual prey includes small fish, crustaceans, and even frogs and small snakes. That's where the nickname toe-biter comes in because our little human toes look like squirmy little fish in the water they’ve been known to latch on with their pincers and inject their digestive juice into them. Rumor has it that hurts like hell. We’re all familiar with the annoying buzzy, disease ridden houseflies that seem to love to pester us at our most vulnerable and crawl all over our precious picnic foods. Well, imagine that, but 15 times bigger. Now you have the Mydas fly, the largest fly in the world and possibly the largest any fly can get in the current conditions of our planet. They basically look like a housefly on serious steroids. Apparently, they’re even more harmless than a housefly but that doesn’t really take away from how gross a giant fly looks. Giant Katydids are freaky looking bugs native to Malaysia. They’re often called long-horned grasshoppers, but they’re more closely related to crickets. Despite their extremely long legs, they’re not very good at jumping. They’re also equipped with wings but very rarely choose to fly. Most of the time they’re just utilizing their camouflage by staying still on leaves and munching on vegetation. They also have extremely long antennae that often grow longer than their entire body. These mysterious bugs can grow up to 6 inches in length, making them one of the longest bugs on this list!
