12 BIGGEST Unsolved Mysteries

From the unexplained Stonehenge to the strange set of glyphs found on Easter Island these are the biggest unsolved mysteries. # 7 Georgia Guidestones The Georgia Guidestones is a monument constructed out of granite, first erected in 1980 in Elbert County, Georgia. It is sometimes called “the American Stonehenge” because it was a stone monument that was made under mysterious circumstances, with no one knowing exactly what it's for. The structure is inscribed with 10 messages that might be meant to serve as a new version of the 10 commandments, in 8 different major languages. Underneath the Guidestones is a time capsule that is meant to be opened at an undetermined date. # 6 Zodiac Killer In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a serial killer in Northern California became a spectacle of the media as he murdered people and sent letters to news outlets for them to publish. He was known as the Zodiac Killer, a name that has origins in his encoded cryptograms that he sent to the press in the Bay Area. His identity was never uncovered, and only one of his cryptograms have ever been definitively solved. The Zodiac Killer’s case has remained opened indefinitely in the city of Vallejo as well as in Napa and Solano County. # 5 Shepherd’s Monument Inscription The Shugborough Inscription is a sequence of letters carved into the Shepherd’s Monument in the gardens of Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire, England. It has the letters O-U-O-S-V-A-V-V framed by D and M on either side. Right above this strange inscription is a mirror image stone relief replica of Nicolas Poussin’s painting called the Shepherds of Arcadia. This was built over 3 centuries ago but still remains unsolved, leading it to be called one of the world’s greatest ciphertexts. Many possible answers involve acrostic poems, using each letter as the beginning of a word or line, while others think that the monument is an encrypted code to the location of the holy grail. # 4 Rongorongo This is a set of glyphs uncovered on Easter Islands where the iconic Moai statues were found. This system of glyphs is called Rongorongo and although centuries and centuries old, remains undeciphered. There have been two dozen wooden objects found that have the Rongorongo glyphs on them, most of them are like wooden tablets covered completely in these symbols that look like humans and animals. At this moment we don’t even know exactly in what direction to read this glyph, but many people think it would be left to right and bottom to top. # 3 Boat on Bouvet Island In the middle of nowhere in the South Atlantic Ocean, there is a small piece of land called Bouvet Island, and it is completely uninhabited and covered in ice. The island is completely barren and incapable of sustaining any sort of life, as well as a good 1,000 miles away from any other land mass. So how did land surveyors in 1964 find a boat and pair of oars in good condition marooned on the island? However, there was no human remains or any other humans found on the island, despite an apparent presence being here recently. To this day, there was no answer to how or why this boat was in the middle of nowhere. # 2 Patomskiy Crater Around 65 years ago, a scientist in Russia went to investigate a strange mountain that was rumored to make people feel sick and even cause some people to disappear. What he found was a 130-foot tall rock formation that looked like a giant egg in a nest, hence the nickname Fire Eagle’s Nest. There is no conclusive evidence as to how exactly this peculiar rock formation came to be, but theories include a meteor crash or volcanic gas. All of these are not concrete answers, and we still don’t exactly know what could have created the Patomskiy Crater. # 1 Eilean Mor Lighthouse In 1900, the only inhabitants on the Scottish island of Eilean Mor were three lighthouse keepers. When a supply ship arrived at the island, they did not find the three keepers waiting for them at the dock. They blew the ship’s horn and sent up a flare, but received no response. When a replacement lighthouse keeper was sent in to investigate, he found no trace of the previous keepers. An unfinished meal was left on the table, the clock had stopped working, and two out of three of the life jackets were missing. Log Entries indicate that the three typically hardy men felt a sense of despair as a strong wind storm hit the island, even though the lighthouse was built to last any storm. The strangest part might be that an island nearby never experienced or witnessed any storms.
