Built with a Rolls Royce turbine engine and four diesel generators the 2300 ton frigate is very fuel efficient for its size and can move quickly in a combat environment. It’s also armed with missiles that can reach ballistic missile launching pads in North Korea, an ability that is critical in ensuring the country’s defense. Extensive trials of the ship will take place later this year, and the Daegu is set to be ready for official use by the end of 2018. 4. Blue Marlin Countries around the world utilize this extraordinary transport vessel that was built in Taiwan in 1999. Its dimensions are jaw dropping. Powered by a 17,000 horsepower engine the semi-submersible craft is 712 feet long and has a deck the size of two soccer pitches. The Blue Marlin can haul an insane seventy-five thousand tons and does so for countries around the world with regularity. The Australian Navy needed an aircraft carrier brought home from Spain, so they called the Blue Marlin. When the USS Cole needed a ride back to the States, there was only one ship that could get the job done. The sight of the Blue Marlin hauling BP’s 59,500-ton semi-submersible Thunder Horse platform in 2004 was unique and shocking to behold. Korea utilized the giant ship to transport four pontoons and 18 hulls from Nantong Port in China. 3. Kaiyangxing Since 1999 China has commissioned and built six variations of its Type 815A ships as part of their expanding naval presence. The communist nation’s most recent addition, the Kaiyangxing was unveiled at a ceremony in January, and it is state of the art. The electronic reconnaissance ship has a full displacement of six thousand metric tons while being able to reach speeds of up to 23 miles per hour. Armed with three small caliber guns the ship is capable of performing missions year around in the harshest weather conditions. China is sure to utilize the vessel in the South China Sea, a body of water that is thought to be home to massive deposits of oil and gas. While China claims ownership to almost all of the sea, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also claim portions. 2. HMAS Canberra The pride of the Royal Australian Navy, the HMAS Canberra is the most advanced ship to ever serve in the RAN. Construction of the craft commenced in 2008, and the ship saw sea trials in early 2014 before being commissioned for use in November 2014. She is 757 feet long and can carry up to 110 vehicles. The Canberra also comes with eight helicopters though it is capable of holding up to 18. She is the first of two ships in her class, the HMAS Adelaide started being built in 2010 and was commissioned in December 2015. The giant ships are ported at Fleet Base East in Sydney, a fact that has been noticed by locals, who have filed numerous complaints about the blocked views, exhaust fumes and machinery noise that the vessels bring with them. 1. Nimitz Aircraft Carriers The U.S. Navy is home to a fleet of the largest aircraft carriers in the world. The Nimitz class is made of ten nuclear-powered ships that have an estimated price tag that is north of 4 billion dollars. The Nimitz ships weigh in at an absolutely ridiculous one hundred thousand tons and can carry up to 90 aircraft which is substantially more than any carrier in the world. The original USS Nimitz was commissioned in 1975 and the most recent addition, the USS George H.W. Bush was officially appointed on January 10, 2009. Since the 70’s the Nimitz ships have seen conflicts and crisis around the world, including the Gulf War and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. The vessels also aided humanitarian efforts following the Indonesian tsunami in 2004 and the earthquake Haiti experienced in 2010.
