14-year-old 8th grader sets new national record for 5000m

At the Jack Griffin Mid-Atlantic Classic on June 10, 2011, Michael Wegner runs a 15:17.9 and sets a new national age-group record for the 5000 meters (average pace 4:56/mile for 3.1 miles). The old record was set by Fred Carley in 1978 in a time of 15:46.8. This clip shows the first mile, as Wegner moves up and takes the lead, and the final 200 meters, as he kicks for the finish.

  4. These guys are beast I can't even run a 20 minute 5000m
  5. Not. Louis Zamparini did it in 14 mins, anywways for an 8th grader, remarkable.
  6. This is not a new record. Steve Prefontaine holds the 5000 meter record for runners 19 and under at 13:39.6
  7. 3.10686miles is 5k m
  8. I ran against Fred Carley at the 1978 National Track Meet in Memphis, TN, I placed 3rd in the 2 Mile Run (9:39.5) and 4th in the 1 Mile Run (4:24.79). I ran 15:09 for 5K at the age of 15. Fred Carley is an animal and that is an incredible time for a 14 year old.
  9. I heard that his dad who was also his coach still coaches. Freddy helps out once and a while. Last thing I heard is that he rides his bike to stay fit. I don't think he does much running anymore.
  10. Awesome! I raced against the former record holder Fred Carley back in 75 and 76.
  11. bro i can barely break 21mins, but i hve been running only 6months.
  12. 3.1miles
  13. amazing time!! He is not pretty to watch, but efficient...
  14. Congrats! Great job with the pacing most kids your age would go out way too fast.
