2001: No. 15 Hampton over No. 2 Iowa State 58-57

NCAA Vault - Relive history by team, year, game or moment using the new interactive play-by-play timeline - http://goo.gl/u8xnKG - No Cyclone could stop the Hampton Pirates from stealing a win from No. 2 seed Iowa State. The 15th seed Pirates' 14-2 run in the final 8 minutes was capped by a clutch shot by Tarvis Williams that put the Pirates up by one with only seconds left on the clock. The 58-57 upset win propelled the Pirates onto a collision course with Georgetown in the next round.

Comments

  1. The Mid Eastern Conference has the most upsets as a 15 seed!!!!!!!
  2. The air horn as the buzzer ... so good
  3. That roar, though.
  4. "Inside the BIG FELLA"
I love that line and then James Worthy going nuts as the shot went in made this one of my favorite Tourney moments
  5. Best game I've ever been to, I've lived in Hamton Roads for 10 years and saw Hampton play in 96 at home against Chowan. Live in Boise now locals came out supporting Hampton, the energy was off the charts, still got my TShirt, my ex and his daughter stormed the court with the team and every time ESPN shoes it every year he gets excited stands in front of the TV and points to himself.
  6. A 15 beating a 2 will always be a huge upset, but I would rank this one as the least surprising of the ones that have happened. ISU was on a downward spiral at the end of the season and Hampton had several players who had transferred from bigger schools and had played in NCAA tournaments before with those schools. In fact I think there have been many 14 over 3 and even 13 over 4 upsets that were bigger surprises than this one.
  7. This upset is exactly why I occasionally pick a 15 seed to beat a 2 seed.

2001: No. 8 Cyclones lose to the Pirates.
2012: No. 8 Puke Blue Devils lose to Lehigh Mountain Hawks.
2013: Dunk City Eagles dunk on No. 8 Hoyas. I picked this one.

The bottom line: A 2 seed that is ranked 8th come tourney time is usually one and done. This might extend to 3 seeds too.
  8. 4:19 one of the most iconic March Madness moments of all time
  9. Who's on a 15 over 2 seed streak?
  10. Who was the Iowa State guy at the very end looking for a fight?
  11. Has a pep band stormed the court before (or since)? Lol
  12. Tinsley played such a horrible game. Really had it not been for Tarvis Williams being in foul trouble for most of the game Hampton could have run away with this one. Glad they didn't though such a great moment.
  13. I spy a dark haired Dr. Harvey
  14. I went to this game! I remember this like yesterday!
  15. Was the game played different back then? Why didn't Iowa State use more clock on their possessions?
  16. 4:21 makes me laugh every time haha
  17. HAMPTON!!!!!! GREATEST EVER!
  18. I know its been a long time ago, but what was Tinsley thinking at the 30 second mark!? They should have run the clock and not taken that shot!
  19. At 6.9 seconds when the shot went in the crowd absolutely exploded, sounds like they're just going absolutely nuts for the last few ticks of the clock especially when Tinsley's layup missed
  20. CLASSIC one of the best times while I was in school…..The Pirates held it down that year….football team, marching band…I love my school…proud Alumni.
