2001 World Series, Game 7: Yankees @ Diamondbacks

New York Yankees 2 at Arizona Diamondbacks 3, F -- A fitting finale to one of the best World Series ever. Surviving two stunning losses in Games 4 and 5, the Diamondbacks found their own late-inning magic in the person of Luis Gonzalez. It began with Hall-of-Fame-bound starters Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling trading zeros through six. Schilling was strong on only two days rest, but left trailing 2-1 in the 8th after an Alfonso Soriano solo HR. Out of the bullpen came Game 5 starter Miguel Batista to face one batter; then manager Bob Brenly made the gutsy call to Randy Johnson -- the Game 6 starter just the night before -- for his second-ever postseason relief appearance. The Big Unit was perfect for 1.1, but all seemed on track for NY as they summoned "automatic" closer Mariano Rivera to hold the one-run lead. Rivera was riding a string of 23 consecutive postseason saves and seemed as invincible as they come. Then, in events as almost as otherworldly as the rain that fell on them in the desert, Mo proved human... and the D-backs became the youngest franchise to win a title on Gonzalez' dramatic game-winning line drive.

2. Legendary finish to one of the best World Series in history. To see the Diamondbacks come back and dethrone the 3x champions was incredible to watch. I knew the Yankees met their match once the series started and I knew the series would be the longest the Yankees had to endure in all of their battles, but the Diamondbacks truly earned this by going through the best closer in the game at the time: Mariano Rivera.
3. Today's Dbacks brought me here because I was so disappointed in what they've become that I needed to remind myself of why I started loving this franchise.

6. Diamomdbacks sold their souls for this world series. Needed Randy and Curt to pitch what, 5 out of the 7 games? And they haven't been back since. Yankees returned 2 years later
7. Arizona stopped the New York yankees dynasty to get 4 wins
8. ~Greatest World Series of my lifetime. D-Backs took a 2-0 lead and Yankees had incredible comeback in each game in New York. For the D-Backs to comeback against the best relief pitcher of all time is amazing.
9. ~Almost feel bad for Greg Colbrunn. He was on deck 3 times the last inning and never got to bat.

11. Total roids. The yankees coming back in the ALDS and in games 4 and 5 didn't require cheating. And the D-Backs haven't won since, yanks have. And they had just won 3 titles in a row. So what if a guy who roided himself to 57 homeruns hit a bloop. The memories of Tino, Jeter, and Brosius in the Bronx, all after the 4 championships they'd won in the previous 5 years, were worth it.

13. I was only 5 years old when we won but man I remember it. When Gonzo got the game winning hit I remember purple fireworks shooting everywhere outside of my grandma's house and the whole neighborhood was cheering. Will always love this team.

19. Mariano Rivera is certainly the greatest postseason pitcher of all time, but he definitely is also known for some of the biggest blown saves of all time as well. Of course part of the reason those blown saves are so big is because they were against him.
