4 Reasons Why The Rotary Engine Is Dead

4 Reasons Why The Rotary Engine Is Dead. The Wankel engine was last seen in a production car in the Mazda RX-8, and currently there are no rotary engines in production. Mazda may bring it back in the RX Vision, however there are many disadvantages to the rotary engine which has kept it from being successful. Rotary engines have a low thermal efficiency as a result of a long combustion chamber and unburnt fuel making it to the exhaust. They also have problems with rotor sealing as a result of uneven temperatures in the combustion chamber since combustion only occurs in one portion of the engine. Oil consumption is also a problem, as oil is injected to add lubrication and help keep the rotor sealed. Finally, emissions are poor and fuel economy is terrible, and ultimately this is the cause of it’s death. 1. The old RX-7 had fuel numbers of 22/28, not near the horsepower but was still fun to drive!
  2. great vid. very clear and concise. never had it explained like that before.
  3. There are many varieties of rotary engines.

This video is specifically about the Wankel rotary engine.

Try not to regard all rotaries as Wankels.
  4. Excellent explanation! Thank you! I've often wondered why these died.
  5. I used to own one a Mazda RX 2 quite a way back it had no emissions controls. It was a car I loved to drive quiet very quiet and a lot of go. It competed quite well with one of the very fast cars here in Australia and actually got better consumption. It was slow in a sense to get to 60 miles an hour but after that it flew. It is strange that the problem I had with the motor is never mentioned. The water seals are long thin loops 4 of them per rotor and these failed frequently. Maybe that was fixed later on but it gave me hell. The trouble started after I was persuaded by my wife of the time to add a third party air-conditioner. I knew one guy who did not have the troubles I did and he would sit for 15 minutes to warm the car up his had lasted five years when I knew him. I had a motor overhaul about every 12 months.
  6. PREMIX
  7. Aviation still uses the rotary engine I believe
  8. well they didn't disappear though.
  9. In the idea of fuel and oil burn, it is like a 2 stroke engine. In some states, certain lawn mowers are banned or frowned upon because of emissions, and they are 4 stroke engines. I wonder how Mazda got permission to put, effectively, a 2 stroke engine on the road.... WOW, I certainly learned a lot from this video. Thanks for posting it. Back in the day, I knew people who wouldn't have any other kind of engine... Apparently, they worked pretty well BUT, they always had an extra, completely overhauled engine, on tap, which told me that they failed fairly frequently.
  10. I could sum it up. The rotary is a enviromentally nasty, expensive stink bomb.
  11. Ignore mechanics and stuff but enjoyed this guy's explanation. Good job.
  12. I think the rotary is way cool, but yes, this is right. I wish the RX-8 came with a nice V6 motor.
  13. you like mybpkle ??
  14. amall med and.large --three
  15. i nver seen one yaken.aprye -----if you had 3 engines on one block --could uses engines as the trasminon.and.thow away bhai the trasmisikn ??
  16. 1.3 L with over 200 horsepower that's impressive lol A shame about the other issues
  17. Twinkle twinkle little Wankel
How I wonder if your crank'll
    Torque enough to turn itself
Or if you'll wind up on the shelf.

(Quote from R&T, back in the day)
  18. The Rotary engine reminds me of one hellova big air grinder.
  19. Because it drank fuel, no bugger could service it, and they're not terribly exciting ....
  20. I Loved my 81 RX7!
Thought it was a sling shot from hell.... "That was then".... LOL!
I even still like the engine & smooth quickness of the RPMs .. until I saw this awesome & very #Educational #Video keep up the good work! : >)
