It's estimated that's dogs have been domesticated for over 32,000 years. In that time we have created breeds that serve many different purposes therefore dogs come in all shapes and sizes. However although dogs are used by humans for different jobs, their sheer loyalty and love they show to their owners has earned them the title of mans best friend. In this list we'll be showing you 5 of the biggest dog breeds in the world. It was bred for the sole purpose to imitate a lion. Specifically the lion of the German city of Leonberg, hence its name. Once bred, people discovered that it had many of the qualities of the lion itself, while still able to be trained. They make excellent search and rescue dogs, not surprising when you realize how much strength this breed has. Interestingly some of the largest dog breeds in the world such as the Newfoundland, St.Bernard & the Great Pyrenees all were created using a Leonberger in the breeding process. 4) Newfoundland On average the Newfoundland isn't as big as some other dogs, but its had some extraordinary exceptions. Some of these dogs can weigh in at 200 pounds, and measure 6 feet from nose to tail, putting them in the category of some of the largest dogs in the world. They are primarily used for water rescue, again their size and strength makes pulling people out of danger possible. Although great it size, they are very docile and loving dogs, hence why they are nicknamed "Gentle Giants". 3) English Mastiff The English Mastiff is not the largest in height by any means, however when it comes to mass, they top any other breed. They originate in England and have been used as watchdogs for thousands of years. An excellent guard dog with the size and power to fulfill its duty and scare away almost any attacker. During the Roman conquest of England, the loyalty and strength of the English Mastiff even impressed Caesar himself. 2) Irish Wolfhound When it comes to height the Irish Wolfhound is one of the tallest breeds in the world. Although very tall, they are lightweight compared to some other breeds but also very fast. The breed has changed over time, the Romans described the wolfhound as war hounds able to induce fear into the enemy. By the 9th century, the Wolfhound were exclusively owned by noble people which contributed to a large decline of the breed. A revival breeding program was successful, but other breeds were mixed in the bloodline slightly changing the breed. 1) Great Danes Great Danes are well-known for being the world’s biggest dog breed, or at least the tallest. The current record holder as world’s largest dog by height is Zeus, a black Great Dane that is 44 inches tall at the shoulder. Modern Great Danes are descended from lightweight ancestors in Denmark crossed with English Mastiffs in the 16th century to make them sturdier hunting dogs. They also have some of the most unique coats of any breed, with some Great Danes even being able to have an almost blue coat of fur. And of course one of the most famous cartoon dogs of all time, Scooby Doo is meant to be a Great Dane.
