5 Things You Should Never Do With An Automatic Transmission Vehicle. Five bad automatic transmission driving habits. Is it okay to coast down a hill in neutral? Should you put the car in neutral when you come to a stop? What is the safest way to launch an automatic car? Is it okay to switch from reverse to drive while the vehicle is moving? 1. I use neutral all the time when I know I have to stop ahead at a traffic light and I like it. I can relax my foot and switch the car to drive when I'm ready to go. The car seems to like it too, it's quieter, and it feels as it's doing less force. Traffic lights are usually 2-3 minutes wait in Florida and I don believe it's really doing car damage at all by using this method. It's mostly flat land. My car has 100 thousand miles so far.
  2. Great
  3. how would they even know it's in neutral lol
  4. Is it safe to downshift in a automatic vehicle when going downhill and use the engine to slow down and not burn up your breaks
  5. Waarom heeft hij die onderdelen bij zich
  6. i have a question what happens if i have the car on drive n forgot to put it in parking n turn off the car n then i notice i forgot to put it in parking?
  7. Nice Lexus
  8. The things that you didn't explain are very important as well as the things that you did explain, re: Not shifting to neutral; Shifting to neutral just before coming to a stop reduces braking effort which prolongs brake pad/rotor life. Try it, you might notice that the car comes to a stop more quickly in neutral with less pedal pressure. That also works to improve steering control in icy/snowy conditions. Think about a rear wheel drive car and you are coming to a stop on a crowned road at a light/stop sign. There are cars in front of you and all of a sudden the front tires lock up. Now the car is sliding toward the curb and still not slowing down. That is because the rear drive is pushing the front tires past their traction limit and you now have no control over the outcome; If the transmission is put into neutral well before you have to stop the front/rear braking will be equal and no lock up will occur. Then, with feathered pedal, no slide nor other unwanted action will occur unless you have left it to late.Regarding neutral when sitting at a prolonged light (you know where they are where you live) if you have already shifted to neutral before stopping to save wear on the brakes then go ahead and shut down the motor. Ecology figures say that thirty seconds will seriously reduce fuel consumption and pollution. I am so detail oriented that I will shut the motor down (under known situations) well before the stop zone. The transmission savings are in the reduced friction of no hydraulic pressure which prevents heat build up. It also reduces friction heat build up when holding on a hill as I am sure many of you do.I have used this method to improve fuel economy of a 99 SAAB 900 by six point four miles per gallon. My current car, a 99 Volvo S70 turbo AWD with a boost increase gets thirty two mpg at 70mph and 27 mpg around town.
  9. it shuts off fuel to the engine but the internal friction of the engine does slow your car down, sometimes a lot (as in engine braking). Less rolling resistance in neutral.
  10. good job.
  11. What about slowly coasting downhill? I've got maybe a 200 meter long pretty steep hill that I often drive down in traffic. I put it in neutral when I start to go down and coast at maybe 10-15 km/h.
  12. addition to the auto no-go's DO NOT TURN OF YOUR OD
  13. the only reason i see a neutral to be engaged is if your gas is stuck in full throttle and in most cars thats all you can do to slow down and kill the motor ( seen a wreck due to the lack of knowledge of the " N " and burnt out the breaks trying to stop the car that had a gas peddle issue leaving the throttle wide open ...they didnt make it )
  14. Live in an area with cold winters, park your car so you don't use reverse the next morning to leave your house.

  17. Hey Engineering Expained,
Another thing I have noticed some people do in Automatics is "gear shifting" For instance starting in D1 and then driving then shift (while moving) to D2 etc.. Is this bad for the Automatic Transmission as well? In my head I couldnt imagine how treating an automatic like a manual is a good thing.
  18. #5: Turn the engine off ... 🤓
  19. I drive an old 05' Dodge Neon and I at times drop to neutral while at a stop due to my idle being so rough. I think I need an engine mount replaced but I could be wrong, not a super car guy.
  20. My personal favourite is to put the car in 'N' for Night Mode... It increases the whine on the turbo's and vastly improves my torque when pulling from a standing start.
