50,000 Chinese dance to a new world record

Square-dancing (known as “Guangchangwu” in Mandarin) is huge in China – and it just got bigger. On Monday, a total of 50,085 Chinese in 14 cities, including Shanghai, Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Chongqing and Shenzhen, danced at the same time, setting a Guinness World Record for multiple-site large-scale dancing. Actually 50,699 people took part in the event, and only 50,085 people qualified for the final count – but that number still smashed the previous record of 18,431, which was set in towns across Hebei Province last year. For China’s 250-million-strong elderly population, square-dancing is a great source of physical and mental exercise. Every morning and evening, “dancing aunties” and “uncles” gather in public squares around the country to shake it out to an upbeat tune. And as an outdoor recreation option, it is not just about dancing but more importantly, about socializing and communicating with your neighbors.
