  1. aouita is fantastic the ferst olympic champion african arabican in 5000m......amazing
  2. Antonio Leitao looks like Frank Shorter in 1972 when he won the Olympic marathon, RIP
  3. sorry I meant 5000 m, but he did have a performance in 10000
  4. he had the word record from 1500 to 10000 m in hs days
  5. Agreed Said Aouita had amazing range from 800m to 5000m.  One of the best ever however I feel that today Bernard Legat and Mo Farah have surpassed Aouita now.
  6. That was a punishing pace for that time.
  7. Aouita, most probably the greatest track runner of all time.  this guy could do it from probably the 400m to 10000m.
  8. Wow Tim Hutchins 4th for Crawley and England Olympian what a runner I want to hopefully follow in his footsteps 1 day.
  9. Pity that Dave Moorcroft was below par but fine run by Tim Hutchings for 4th.
  10. imo the greatest runner of all time:)
  11. wonderful seeing this again.
  12. My clubmate Said Aouita came first ... this is the history in the making !!
  13. This race was made much harder for the milers to win as everyone had to run heats, semis and a final!
  14. My clubmate came 4th
  15. THanks for posting this, and sorry to hear about the bronze medalist here, who was largely responsible for this punishing pace; you can tell it's not an easy pace when there's no huge knot of guys near the front, constantly jockeying around. I was (still am) a John Walker fan and though he's past his prime, proud of his effort in a race that played out not very conducive for a miler.
  16. Sadly, my compatriot, the bronze medalist António Leitão, passed away last March 18, due to iron overload. Let this superb video remain here as an homage to a good man and an excellent athlete! My other compatriot, Ezequiel Canário, whom in this race greatly helped Leitão to get his medal and achieved his then personal best at 5.000 km, retired shortly after the 1990 Split European Champioships due to recurrent lesions and now lives in Algarve where he runs a coffee shop.
