More information about the video content bellow: 1. The lands of Vietnam have been inhabited by humans for as much as 250 thousand years! Early human fossils are from the Middle Pleistocene age. They include mostly isolated teeth from northern Vietnam at Tham Om, and Hang Hum. The Vietnamese civilization emerged about 5000 years ago, with the Hồng Bàng dynasty in 2879 BC. 2. Ho Chi Minh (known affectionately as ‘Uncle Ho’) travels 8000 miles every year. This is only peculiar because he has been dead for over 40 years now. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi is a strange and interesting place to visit on your travels in Vietnam. His body is on show for the world to see for only 9 months of the year. The Mausoleum is usually shut from September to December as Uncle Ho makes his annual journey to Moscow for ‘maintenance’. 3. The Vietnamese language has six different tones. A change in tone changes the meaning of the word. This makes their language somewhat difficult to learn. 4. The Vietnam War or the Second War of Indochina was formerly America’s longest war until it was surpassed by the war in Afghanistan. It had no clear cause and was started as a conflict. It involved the communist government of North Vietnam in alliance with the Viet Cong against the government of South Vietnam with support from the Americans. It lasted from 1954 to 1975. An estimated 2 million civilians and 1.3 million soldiers died during the war. Australia and New Zealand also fought in Vietnam, but the largest contingent of anti-Communist forces came from South Korea. 5. There exist several floating fishing villages in Vietnam, e.g. Cua Van in Ha Long Bay. There, inhabitants rarely or (in the past) even never put their feet on land. Classes therefore are held in moving with those floating villages so that students don’t have to miss their lessons. 6. Ha Noi means “city inside rivers”. Its historic and more formal name, Thang Long, has a more bad-ass meaning: “Ascending Dragon”. Hanoi celebrated its 1000th anniversary as the capital of Vietnam on 10/10/2010. Hanoi has a thriving arts scene, including jazz clubs and water puppetry. Yes, you read that correctly. The art of water puppetry dates back to the 11th century, when these puppets were used to tell stories on the rice paddies. 7. The Vietnamese believe in Three Kitchen Gods or Tao Quan, who live with and observe each family’s actions. They depart at the end of the Lunar Year to report their findings to Ngoc Hoan, The Jade Emperor.
