9 biggest weather disasters in the next 30 Years: Jeff Masters at TEDxBermuda

One year before Hurricane Sandy, Jeff Masters from Weather Underground predicts 9 weather disasters that could strike the United States in the next 30 years. Last week, Number 6 on his list happened. What are the other 8 disasters, and what can we do to prepare? From TEDxBermuda, October 2011.

Comments

  1. Hurricane Sandy caused some $65 billion in damage, and that does not include costs of the ongoing inconveniences to people whose commutes and jobs took a hit from the storm. NY now has to shut down an entire subway train line, the L, in order to repair the damage incurred when the tunnel was flooded with salt water. Best case is that the tunnel is closed for some 18 months. The cost of the repairs alone is $300 m. The cost of the inconveniencing of some 400,000 commuters (who are losing their plan A commute) for over a year is in the tens of millions. And the hit on real estate prices (people trying to sell apartments in Williamsburg and Bushwick can't find buyers) may well be up to a billion.
  2. Note to self: when trying to show how awful the future weather will be due to global warming do not mention how awful we are at understanding and predicting storms that already exist. Note: 8:03 vs 6:18
  3. If I remember; correctly, back in the 1960's, I had a teacher who told us that the Farmer's Almanac could predict the weather at least up to 50 years! Is that correct; or, is there any record of such a fact?
  4. Hurricane frequency for a warmer world is starting to become less and less likely. Granted, we have only warmed 0.4C compared to the 100 year average as of July 2013.
  5. About what?
  6. we need more science-based predictions and less religion-based predictions!
  7. why is that ironic?
  8. Ironic how #1 and #2 are not caused by global warming.
  9. A must view for all those who think climate change is unreal. #HurricanePredictions
  10. The prediction of the New York flooding is at 06:18 onwards and sounds spot on.
