Tamam Shud In December 1948, the unidentified body of a man was found on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. Normally, this would simply be distressing, but then it got weird. A hidden pocket sewn into the man's pants held a strange note, the words “Tamam Shud” scrawled on it. Translated to mean “ended” or “finished,” it is a phrase found on the last page of a book of poems that, coincidentally, were found in an unlocked car somewhat nearby. The discovered book had a strange cypher on one page, also scrawled, and according to leading cryptologists, it's too short to decode, as there isn't enough text to discern a pattern. Some speculate “tamam shud” was some kind of strange suicide note, since it meant “finished” and the book of poems had a strong theme of living life to the fullest and not regretting when it ends. Others, however, maintain the case has something to do with spies and conspiracies. 5. Zodiac Killer Serial killers are always given a special place of infamy, but it's the ones who were never caught that live in legend. The Zodiac Killer is one such monster, operating in northern California in the 1960s and 70s. So called “Zodiac” for a series of letters written to newspapers claiming credit for their early victims, identifying themselves as Zodiac. Along with these letters was a cipher, which, once mostly decoded, described the killer's belief that their victims would become their slaves in the afterlife. Zodiac claimed responsibility for 37 total murders, but police have only confirmed seven victims, two of which survived. The letters continued, some confirmed and some with the writer's identity disputed, through 1978. There have been several suspects, but no arrests have ever been made. 4. Jack the Ripper Far more mysterious, however, is the case of Jack the Ripper, famed London-based serial killer from 1888. Again, the name comes from a letter allegedly written by the killer, though many people believe the letter to be a hoax. He was also sometimes called “The Whitechapel Murderer” for his killing area, or “Leather Apron” because many prostitutes, the Ripper's favorite victims, alleged to fear a man with a leather apron. Eleven separate murders were linked as the “Whitechapel Murders,” but only five of those are considered likely to have been the Ripper's doing. These murders were brutal, with several victims missing organs upon discovery. Some believe the murders stopped due to the Ripper's death, imprisonment for a separate crime, being institutionalized, or emigrating elsewhere, but as there has never been a definitive arrest, this is entirely speculation. 3. Roanoke Colony We've already talked about the mysterious circumstance of all the inhabitants of a ship going missing, but what about an entire colony's worth of people? Originally founded by Sir Walter Raleigh, the Roanoke Colony was established in 1585 in what is now Dare County, North Carolina. 108 people were left to establish the colony while Raleigh traveled back to England for fresh men and supplies. But in 1587, the colony was found abandoned with only a single skeleton and the word “CROATOAN” carved into a fence post around the village. All houses in the settlement had been dismantled, and there was no sign of a struggle. 2. Easter Island In the middle of the Pacific sits the island of Rapa Nui, or Easter Island. Since its discovery by European sailors in 1722 it has captivated the globe with its mystery. Nearly 900 massive stone heads, some weighing up to 86 tons, call it home, though no one knows how the natives built or moved them around, or why. Furthermore, evidence suggests that the island was once lush and beautiful, turned into a treeless wasteland by unknown causes. 1. Stonehenge The most mysterious of all, of course, has to be Stonehenge. Archeologists believe the strange assortment of massive stones were assembled around 3,000 BC, so long ago it's basically unfathomable. There are many competing theories regarding why someone would make such a monument. The stones are aligned with the sunset of the winter solstice and the opposing sunrise of the summer solstice, strangely, and some suggest this inspired the construction, though it doesn't explain much. Deepening the mystery further, there is no written documentation of the culture who built it.

  2. Jack the Ripper identified recently. Forensic scientist took a scarf worn by one of his victims that had been saved by a police officers family and took dna samples. They then compared the dna samples to relatives of the three main suspects at the time and found a match. I believe they found that the man had been sent to a mental hospital for other reasons, and thus the killings stopped
