  2. RE: "She says English is a romance language...untrue." If you review the video at 2:40, Dr. Pierce actually says, "..What we know is, the closer the language is to English, such as a Romance language, um, the easier it would be for that child to acquire the language. But, the more distance between their language (such as Russian, or Arabic or Turkish) ... the more distance there is between the written language and the spoken language and English, the more challenge there might be in learning the English language."
So, what is she saying here? It appears that students who are literate in a
Romance language (e.g., Spanish, Portugese, Italian) as their primary language might acquire English more readily than students who are literate in a non-romance language  such as Russian, Arabic Turkish, because those languages share fewer similarities with English in terms of their alphabetic symbols, cognates, syntax, etc. She is not calling English a Romance language.
  3. She says English is a romance language....untrue...!
  4. The English Learners video was well presented and explained.  Some of the topics were inappropriate assessment, cultural background and bias, classroom-based assessment and assessing children with disabilities.
