Good language used wrong... … isn’t good language. Several of my friends are university teachers, and since we’re all doing “language” stuff, I get to hear about a lot of the mistakes their students make. And the most common mistake (and the one which annoys them the most) has nothing to do with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, or anything like that. No. It’s using the wrong KIND of language. I shouldn’t need to point out that using the “F” word with your university professor is a bad idea (though some students do). But what about words like “mate”? I’ll write a whole separate email about the word “mate” another time... … but the answer is definitely no. What about other casual expressions? This is where things get tough. Because although one thing might be OK... another isn’t. And it all depends on the kind of relationship you have with the person you’re speaking with. Something which seems fine can end up being very rude and disrespectful, “mate." Want more help on learning and using English?   2. I am a native English speaker born and raised in America. I say once English-Learners have a firm understanding on English grammar and sentence structure and can hold at least a basic conversation, then one can gradually learn and grow their vocabulary.
