It was a very serious situation as an attempt was made to rescue her but her limp body was dragged from the surf after she became unconscious. Maya was given emergency CPR and rushed to a Leiria hospital. It's been confirmed that she's stable and recovering in hospital. The fearless Brazilian surfer, four times winner of the women's category of the Billabong XXL Awards, has been in Portugal for two weeks with big wave riders Carlos Burle and Garrett McNamara to try and beat the biggest wave ever ridden. Nazare has been hit by some of the biggest swells in years with waves breaking at 60-80 feet. This is the second time Maya's been in a life threatening situation in big surf, a couple of years ago she was resuscitated after she nearly drowned at Teahupoo. 3. Take my advice girl; get rid of that jet-ski fellow asap. He damn nearly killed you this time and judging by the way he handled your situation you will die next time. you're way too professional a surfer to have a ignorant bastard like him to hold your life in his hands. the proof is in the pudding... he made a series of miscalculated passes to pick you up and nearly caused your life. he should be made to kneel by your feet and beg for forgiveness.

No dudo que Carlos tenga larga experiencia en este tipo de salvamentos, pero es evidente que en este caso solo con haber llegado un poco mas lento en la primera ocasion donde la chica todavia tenia fuerzas para subirse a la tabla, la situacion hubiese sido otra, la segunda lo mismo, la chica no tenia fuerzas para agarrarse a la cuerda, tenia tiempo de intentar que se subiese a la tabla, arrastrarla 50 metros sin apenas aire , sin comentarios, vamos para mi un desastre de salvamento. esta claro funciona con surferos  al 100 x 100  de fuerzas pero no con alguien desfallecido.

9. i love listening to laird hamilton talk about this. carlos apparently went back out after pulling her out and said he surfed this wave. laird is like, he may have wiped out on this wave but he didn't surf it. 
10. rule number one in a rescue "your own safety comes first" last thing you want is to go from being a rescuer to being rescued yourself!!! so all the ppl hating shut the fuck up!!!

15. big wave surfing is all about big ego and small penis... haha what are they trying to prove? i can probably get the same amount of adrenaline from skateboarding down a hill, and i dont have to rely on a useless mug on the jetskii... it looks epic thats for true but dayyuumm... I respect the power of the ocean too much for that. 
16. james jones you could have surf all the beaches you want but maya for sure have more stamina and balls than you do so stop bragging about your manliness

18. And also for the comments saying girls aren't strong enough to surf etc., that's really a shame you say that. Maya has worked very hard to do what she does, as do many other girl surfers, who put themselves right up against the men. If girls aren't strong enough to surf, why are they able to play tennis, soccer, etc.; do those sports not require strength?
19. That rope is to tow her into the waves, not to save her. It is also very hard to pick up a person in that situation, for there are many large waves, strong current, and you need to avoid hitting the surfer. And also all the foam on the surface can easily stall the ski, so you can't stop running. The ski driver did a great job on his end, but unluckily could not snatch her. And what would it have done if he got in the water while she was conscious? These people are trained and do whatever they can.
    
    As for the surfer, sometimes you push the limits and they push back. You can't rely on the ski to save your life (not that that was what maya did). Sorry for ranting, but those who see these vids who have little to no knowledge about surfing shouldn't just act like this was all someone's fault.
20. If she isn't good enough to ride those waves, then she should stay put on the shore. She is not only risking her life but their colleagues lives. Egotistic girl.
