USA's Bob Beamon breaks the world record in the long jump by nearly two feet during the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.

  1. 21 and 3/4 inches farther than the old record? That's so beyond the realm of physical achievements it may be the single greatest athletic achievement of all-time. It's almost as if someone ran the 100 meters in about 8.8 seconds or the mile in about 3:30. Astonishing!
  2. Can you imagine being a competitor in that field? And you see Beamon do that on his FIRST jump? You go into an Olympic final, thinking maybe you might need to get close to the previous record to have a shot at gold. Oh no. Not only do you have to break the world record, but you'd have to jump almost two feet beyond the record. I mean, sheesh.
  3. like si viniste por Borja xDDDDDDDDD
  4. ...This is great.....but the 1980 USA Hockey team upset over Russia was even greater.......
  5. I did some calculation. In order to equal the percentage of increase of Bob Beamons jump from the new world record set by Mike Powell one would have to jump 31.3 feet.
  6. this is one of my top 10 memorable sports moments. thanks bob.
  7. I measured this distance out in my backyard one day. Until you see how far that actually is, it's inconceivable someone could jump that distance.
  8. As a fourteen year old watching this event, I still, to this day get "goosebumps" watching this! Franz Klammer's downhill run in 1976 is fantastic also.
  11. Чудесное видио ... Апофеоз Молодости ...Фейерверк Безграничных Возможностей...Вспышка Нового Супер Качества....Изумлению и Восхищению нет предела..!!!!!
  12. I know it probably doesn't matter to those in the know. But the way he landed this and jumped out makes it more impressive to me then Powells. This just looked perfect.
  13. I hate how when an NFL player runs a 40y in 5 seconds, it gets millions of views, but there are many athletes who can embarrass him in a 40y, yet no one knows their name.

Same with how if a basketball player can get their head on the rim, everyone freaks out, yet most Olympic high jumpers can get their whole body over the rim.

Track and field (or athletics if you're from anywhere else in the world) is easily the most underrated sport, and it sucks how nobody cares or pays attention to it besides the Olympics or NCAA
  14. He didn't even land like they do today which I'm sure gets you a little further. He kinda looked like he was flying.
  15. Holy s**t.
  16. He did everything perfectly. No one even jumps this far now. Very rare to see a 28' jump.
  17. Every time time I watch this it inspires me to greater heights. Never give up , never surrender and always believe in yourself.
  18. I can remember this as a 9 year old watching on TV.  The amount by which he eclipsed the old record blew me away!
  19. I read an article written by a physicist who examined the forces necessary to jump that far. He claimed that if Beamon had jumped any farther, the stresses on his legs would have broken them.
  20. The greatest single achievement by an athlete in the history of sport.
