Cat Sized Rodents Are Returning to Cities (Documentary)

The term giant rat has been applied to various species of large rodents. They tend to be native to tropical and sub-tropical locations. Some have flourished in other climates, including the Coypu and the Gambian pouched rat, which have both become invasive species. Giant rats have also figured in popular fiction, where they are often portrayed as monster-like creatures. Rats of the future could grow to the size of sheep or even bigger as they evolve, experts have warned. Super-adaptable rodents could take advantage of larger mammals becoming extinct. In time, rats could grow to be the size of the capybara, the world's largest rodent which can reach 80kg (12st). 'Animals will evolve, over time, into whatever designs will enable them to survive and to produce offspring,' said geologist Dr Jan Zalasiewicz, from the University of Leicester. 'Given enough time, rats could probably grow to be at least as large as the capybara, the world's largest rodent, that lives today [and] can reach 80kg. 'If the ecospace was sufficiently empty, then they could get larger still.' The largest extinct rodent known, Josephoartegasia monesi, which lived three million years ago, was larger than a bull and weighed over a ton. A hint of the nightmare to come can be seen on 'rat islands' -- isolated regions where rats introduced by humans have quickly risen to become the dominant species, according to Dr Zalasiewicz. 'So there will be future thin rats, future fat rats, slow and heavy rats, fast and ferocious rats, probably future aquatic rats -- the list goes on,' he added.

Personally I think you are looking for some nutria rats, as I searched for some images of musk rats, they gave another suggestion and as I look forward to where the habitat would be, same dense areas as musk rats but they live up to new York on the map, which would explain why I've never seen some in Canada.
5. rats can get really big. i had a pet rat that got huge! i fed him all organic and his mom so i bet its the diet that makes them big or small.

11. Pfft I have seen some big ass rats in Va. I even caught two good sized ones in my Mom's house we called the bigger male Rat Foo and Don two those were about the size of a juvenile opossum.
