My first game in Civilization 5 and I can't destroy the city because there isn't land for me to attack it with a land unit. Lucky victory was still possible.

this is stupid. you need ships that can do melee attack to capture the city. it is not enough to bombard with battleships and destroyers alone. augustus is right. you are stupid.

you probly heard this before,but: you could have moved an embarked land unit on to the city tile to conquer after your bombard,or the destroyer unit has melee ability and, could have moved into into the city to conquer
yh i cant destroy carthage. It gets to zero health and then nothing happens.

atom bomb or nuclear bomb can kill ur own army? if they close?
You can't destroy a capital city and you can only destroy a city by nuke or raising it
This was my first game ever in the Civilization series, so I wasn't aware(at the time) how to capture the city. But now it doesn't matter, they fixed it with the new expansion Gods & Kings.
You don't need to embark your units on land before you attack a city. Any unit that is capable of amphibious assault can cap it.
