Colo 59 birthday today: Guinness Strongest, smartest, largest Monkeys and Apes

The 2011 Guinness World Records book shows that Colo is the world's oldest gorilla at over 50 years old. She lives at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. She holds many more amazing records. Colo is also the world's first gorilla born in captivity and the oldest in captivity. She was born on December 22, 1956 at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. She is a Western lowland gorilla, She is an amazing world record holder for many additional reasons. Colo gave birth to Emmy, the first second-generation gorilla born in captivity and became a grandmother when Cora, the first third-generation gorilla, was captive born. In addition, for ten years, Colo's grandsons, Mosuba and Macombo II, were the only gorilla twins born in the western hemisphere! Colo is also the great grandmother of Timu, the first surviving gorilla conceived by artificial insemination. Another Columbus Zoo gorilla Sunshine, a huge male who once resided here and also left offspring. Sunshine, who weighs around 600 lbs. and stood at 6 feet 10 inches tall, is a giant and maybe the largest known gorilla. He was mated with Colo and several other females and several of his descendants remain, such as Kanzi and his sister Panbanisha may be the world’s most intelligent non-human animals. He has been called the world’s smartest monkey - Kanzi the 'talking' Ape sets world record: http://www.worldrecordacademy.com/nature/smartest_monkey_Kanzi_the_talking_Ape_sets_world_record_101896.html He lives in Iowa where expert Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh has been teaching him to 'speak' by pointing at symbols on a computer; Kanzi is believed to understand around 450 words – 30 to 40 of which he uses on a daily basis - setting the new world record for the Smartest monkey . Photo: Kanzi, The World's Smartest Monkey, can 'talk' with humans by pointing at symbols on a computer. He speaks by pressing a symbol on the computer which then repeats the word out loud. Dr Savage-Rumbaugh says that he is even able to put together two-word sentences and shows remarkable invention when creating new phrases. According to Dr. Sue, Kanzi knows "several thousand" words, giving him the same vocabulary level as a human toddler. They began competently using the lexigrams, becoming not only the first observed apes to have learned aspects of language naturalistically rather than through direct training, but also the first observed bonobos to appear to use some elements of language at all. In a short time, they had mastered many words When they hear a spoken word, through headphones, to filter out nonverbal clues, they can point to the correct lexigram. They are also accomplished tool users. He speaks by pressing a symbol on the computer which then repeats the word out loud. The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. It is a highly endangered species. Video shows very rare vocalization of the Bonobo or Pygmy Chimpanzee. Few recordings of bonobo vocalizations exist. These bonobos answer people verbally. Bonobos also make a murmuring sound that is more difficult to record. They are highly intelligent and can read and write (using a computer). The bonobo, Kanzi, shown here has a large vocabulary. Maybe they have a language that people don't understand. Sharing more than 98% of its DNA with humans, the bonobo and chimp are our closest living relative. It also shows the world’s largest known chimpanzee, Kermit, who is also now deceased. Kermit may belong to a newly discovered species of human-sized chimpanzees, sometimes called Bili chimpanzees. It is unknown whether this is a new species of ape, or a new species of chimpanzee. Some have speculated that it might be a cross between the chimpanzee and gorilla, although it is unknown whether the chimpanzee and gorilla can breed. Thus, it might be an undiscovered genetic relative of humans. It is sometimes called the Bili ape. Perhaps this is humanity’s closest living relative. The mandrill is the world’s largest monkey species. Lucy, the female hominid australopithecine, was found by Paleoanthropologist Donald C. Johanson, who named her "Lucy" after the song "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" by John Lennon of The Beatles. She is thought to be much like the human ancestor. 14 12 12GuinnessApeEdEx
