The first journey in the so-called Freightliner Inspiration Truck, which took place on U.S. highway 15 in Las Vegas, was made by Brian Sandoval, Governor of Nevada, and Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard. The truck is equipped with the intelligent Highway Pilot system for autonomous driving. The state of Nevada licensed two Freightliner Inspiration Trucks for regular operation on public roads. Daimler Trucks is the global leading truck manufacturer and, with the Freightliner brand, also the biggest producer in the U.S. “Our Freightliner Inspiration Truck is the world´s first autonomous commercial vehicle to be licensed for road use. Our achievement here underlines yet again our role as a technological pioneer and demonstrates our consistent dedication to develop the technology for autonomous long-distance driving to series production standard. I am proud of this extra-ordinary achievement by the Daimler Trucks team,” stated Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler AG board member responsible for Trucks and Buses. Highway Pilot system to be developed to series production standard Transport in the future must be even safer, more efficient and more networked – this is the aspiration that Daimler Trucks has expressed in the new Freightliner Inspiration Truck. In July of last year, Daimler Trucks provided the world´s first demonstration of an autonomous truck in action when the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025. Spectacular world premiere near Las Vegas The world premiere of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck took place near Las Vegas, in front of representatives of the media, government as well as business and finance. Trucks are by far the most important means of transport in the U.S. In 2012, trucks transported around 70 percent of all freight tonnage in the United States. This way, a total of 9.4 billion tons of freight were moved by trucks. Globally, the road freight transport is expected to even triple between now and 2050. Autonomous trucks provide the opportunity to cope with this growth in a manner that harmonizes economic and environmental needs. “Nevada is proud to be making transportation history today by hosting the first U.S. public highway drive for a licensed autonomous commercial truck. The application of this innovative technology to one of America’s most important industries will have a lasting impact on our state and help shape the New Nevada economy,” said Gov. Sandoval. “The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has been closely monitoring the advancements being made in autonomous vehicle development and reviewed DTNA’s safety, testing and training plans before granting permission for this demonstration of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck.” Record-breaking World Premiere of Freightliner Inspiration Truck on Hoover Dam • Highest light output projection of 1.17 million lumens earns Freightliner a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title • Hoover Dam becomes biggest projection screen ever in North America, introducing world’s first autonomous truck to be granted a license to operate on public roads • Historic introduction of unique Freightliner Inspiration Truck with projection onto massive face of the most iconic dam in the U.S. Daimler Self Driving Truck Nevada Worlds First Licensed Autonomous Truck Mercedes HD CARJAM TV

  1. I'll admit, I like the lights on it, but the fact that it is self driving makes me shit bricks, and the best part of driving for me is ACTUALLY OPERATING THE VEHICLE!!! and now companies are trying to take that away WHAT THE FUCK!?!
  2. The future of this country is f/cked, robots will be doing everything and people will have no jobs . Only rich people will enjoy life....
  3. F/cking rich people trying to take even more good paying jobs away! This needs to stop ! before we know it everyone is going to be making Min wag or collecting welfare ! Their making it impossible to escape poverty on purpose.
  4. I think the purple lights in the front are a DOT violation . How is a state trooper going to pull this thing over, to write it a ticket? Then there is no one to give the ticket to.
  5. This is a safety issue . All it takes is one glitch .... and people's lives are gone .
  6. another positive outlook on this awesome technology. the restrooms at loves truck stop will smell 1000 times better without grown men that still aren't potty trained.
  7. waw
  8. hey... do you want to buy my truck and convert it to driverless? i say hurray! first one i see i'm going to cut it off and let it hit me... free money! imagine that law suit? i wonder if the suits have figured out how to get around that one? no driver to blame.
  9. Oh, great! Let's put 50 000 truck drivers out of work now too.
  10. ouais dans le Temiskaming l'hiver ou dans le temps de la chasse a Mont laurier entre les roulottes ..... pas certain
  11. can you program to stop to pick up hookers?
  12. i drive a truck cuz i like to drive.. i dont need no damn computer doin what i like to do.. take that shit somewhere else sorry not for me... if u lazy behind the wheel then u in the wrong profession.. point blank.. u cant hack the long roads get the fuck out..
  13. WERE ALL FUCKED
  14. unemployment is not the problem. its the solution. Why be employed doing day to day jobs, when money will be abolished in the future?
  15. Truck driving jobs will be completely gone in the next 20-30 years and we'll start to see a decline in as little as the next ten. First will be taxi cabs, long haul trucking, then inter city deliveries and trash pickups. Basically, any low skill job that someone can engineer a robot to replace you with will be gone at some point. Don't believe it? Two reasons for automated trucking the government is backing it and second the companies are investing in it. Why would they pay you 40-70k per year when they can get twice the performance and cut your job at the same time? A secondary education will be required in the next 50 years to get any job which will be higher skilled employment only. Period. Need to buy a Tesla, go to work and then send your car to work too as taxi service for extra income. People come up with lots of scenarios they think they haven't thought of why driverless cars won't work and these computers are already better drivers than us now. There isn't a scenario they haven't already programed in. So you shouldn't relax if you're a truck driver, you need to plan for the future and stop relying on a job that will be obsolete in the next 20 years, unless you'll be retired by then. It sucks but that's progress. This stuff was already predicted 20 years ago in movies, seemed like science fiction at the time but it's here.
  16. Auto-drive has been possible for the freeways since the early 1980's. A lane-keeper and anti-collision system coupled with GPS can handle freeways.

With change comes change. Yes we will not need as many drivers. You will need some for quite a while during changeover, and some routes, like the winter ice roads require maintenance people, if not drivers.

And yes, someone has to handle loading and unloading.

Fact is, even if you keep current requirements for human drivers, and phase them out only by attrition, the savings in insurance and damages will nearly pay the "driver."

The reduction in damage to infrastructure is a huge savings (autonomous vehicles can report road conditions and use other vehicles data to avoid damaged areas.

Autoves can also travel much more closely together in safety than humans, greatly increasing traffic capacity.

Autoves move at more constant speeds than humans, minimizing traffic blockages and stop and go traffic. This means even higher carrying capacity for the roadway.

Perfection isn't a requirement. To be a commercial advantage, all a system has to do is as well as the average--that raises the average. Current systems are better than the average human, if only because they don't get tired, bored, have to pee or get sick. Most humans aren't trained to react properly to multi-vehicle or loose freight accidents, and the untrained freeze. In routine things, humans lose interest, one-third of us are hallucinating at any time (Yeah, I found that one researching hallucinations I got from bupropion.)

Your abilities are reduced by illness before you are symptomatic, and any illness should make you reconsider driving.
  17. Stupid as shit. I would love to see this truck drive in Wyoming. It won't succeed.
  18. WHERE IS THE FUCKING IN CAB TOILET NOT SO SMART STUPID NOT SO SMART !  HA HA HA
