The first journey in the so-called Freightliner Inspiration Truck, which took place on U.S. highway 15 in Las Vegas, was made by Brian Sandoval, Governor of Nevada, and Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard. The truck is equipped with the intelligent Highway Pilot system for autonomous driving. The state of Nevada licensed two Freightliner Inspiration Trucks for regular operation on public roads. Daimler Trucks is the global leading truck manufacturer and, with the Freightliner brand, also the biggest producer in the U.S. “Our Freightliner Inspiration Truck is the world´s first autonomous commercial vehicle to be licensed for road use. In July of last year, Daimler Trucks provided the world´s first demonstration of an autonomous truck in action when the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025. Spectacular world premiere near Las Vegas The world premiere of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck took place near Las Vegas, in front of representatives of the media, government as well as business and finance. Trucks are by far the most important means of transport in the U.S. In 2012, trucks transported around 70 percent of all freight tonnage in the United States. This way, a total of 9.4 billion tons of freight were moved by trucks. Globally, the road freight transport is expected to even triple between now and 2050. 14. unemployment is not the problem. its the solution. Why be employed doing day to day jobs, when money will be abolished in the future?
15. Truck driving jobs will be completely gone in the next 20-30 years and we'll start to see a decline in as little as the next ten. First will be taxi cabs, long haul trucking, then inter city deliveries and trash pickups. Basically, any low skill job that someone can engineer a robot to replace you with will be gone at some point. Don't believe it? Two reasons for automated trucking the government is backing it and second the companies are investing in it. Why would they pay you 40-70k per year when they can get twice the performance and cut your job at the same time? A secondary education will be required in the next 50 years to get any job which will be higher skilled employment only. Period. Need to buy a Tesla, go to work and then send your car to work too as taxi service for extra income. People come up with lots of scenarios they think they haven't thought of why driverless cars won't work and these computers are already better drivers than us now. There isn't a scenario they haven't already programed in. So you shouldn't relax if you're a truck driver, you need to plan for the future and stop relying on a job that will be obsolete in the next 20 years, unless you'll be retired by then. It sucks but that's progress. This stuff was already predicted 20 years ago in movies, seemed like science fiction at the time but it's here.
16. Auto-drive has been possible for the freeways since the early 1980's. A lane-keeper and anti-collision system coupled with GPS can handle freeways.
    
    With change comes change. Yes we will not need as many drivers. You will need some for quite a while during changeover, and some routes, like the winter ice roads require maintenance people, if not drivers.
    
    And yes, someone has to handle loading and unloading.
    
    Fact is, even if you keep current requirements for human drivers, and phase them out only by attrition, the savings in insurance and damages will nearly pay the "driver."
    
    The reduction in damage to infrastructure is a huge savings (autonomous vehicles can report road conditions and use other vehicles data to avoid damaged areas.
    
    Autoves can also travel much more closely together in safety than humans, greatly increasing traffic capacity.
    
    Autoves move at more constant speeds than humans, minimizing traffic blockages and stop and go traffic. This means even higher carrying capacity for the roadway.
    
    Perfection isn't a requirement. To be a commercial advantage, all a system has to do is as well as the average--that raises the average. Current systems are better than the average human, if only because they don't get tired, bored, have to pee or get sick. Most humans aren't trained to react properly to multi-vehicle or loose freight accidents, and the untrained freeze. In routine things, humans lose interest, one-third of us are hallucinating at any time (Yeah, I found that one researching hallucinations I got from bupropion.)
    
    Your abilities are reduced by illness before you are symptomatic, and any illness should make you reconsider driving.
