Drilled, Slotted & Vented Brake Rotors - What's Best?

When replacing your brake rotors, you may opt to upgrade to drilled, slotted, or vented rotors. Which brake rotor is best? What brake rotors will perform better? What are the best options for performance brakes? Ultimately, vented disc are great for heat rejection. Slotted rotors can aid in moving debris away from the rotor, and potentially adding a biting surface for the pad to contact. Drilled rotors aren't used in professional racing due to the stress failures they tend to have. 1. slotted rotor also produces a lot of vibration during braking
  2. you forgot dimpled rotors!
  3. drum brakes all round for me please
  4. I have some really nice drilled and slotted rotors, and I beat the crap out of them.. not all of them are prone to failure. I understand that they add stress points, and could cause cracking, but couldn't the surface area in the holes rotating on the same axis as the vents actually improve heat dissipation if engineered correctly? Just a thought. Also, the last rotors I had were just slotted, and they cracked and pitted to hell and back. Probably more because they were crap rotors regardless of the slots though
  5. I put drilled-slotted-vented-carbon rotors on my Prius and now it stops so hard my wife's dentures fly out every time.
  6. i have a 2002 honda accord v6 coupe. time too change my rotors. what do you recommend? I'm leaning on vented rotors and what kind of brake pads? thanks
  7. great presentation.. good quality content and efficient quantitative delivery
  8. So AMG and Ferrari sacrifice brake performance for "cool looks"?!! I don't think so.
  9. what about the `petaled` discs you see on motorbikes ? Anyway another great vid ty
  10. You should use "eg" as the abbreviation for example, not "ex".
  11. The drilled rotors and the slotted rotors look the same (other than the slotted being vented as well). The drilled have slots and the slotted have drilled holes?
  12. I've had my cross-drilled AND slotted rotors on my car for 5 plus years and auto crossed with it, and they are holding up fine. No stress cracks. They do get hot fast but I attribute that to the fact that I don't have air ducts to help with cooling.
  13. Good
  14. I got 11 full years out of my last set of 'drilled' 930 Porsche rotors. This was almost all racetrack use. Whether the holes of Porsche 930 and 993 rotors are drilled or cast in is the subject of a lot of debate. Many rotors are actually drilled. Some (the Porsche 993 and 930 ones) are said to be cast.
  15. which type of rotor do you recommend for off-road 4x4s?
  16. mine is as flat as my forehead

not sure if they are good brakes or not ...
  17. I'm surprised you didn't touch on brake float, true floating rotors, and two-piece rotors. I'm sure you have plenty of viewers who could use the education.
  18. I went to get my brakes checked to see how much life they all have. They dude was trying to sell me drilled and slotted rotors. Safe to say I never went back and I put on solid rotors. I figured the less mass was obvious, but it's cool to know about the stress points. Although I doubt I'd ever hit that on the street
  19. i was about to make a comment about drilled F1 brakes .... only turns out they are not drilled
  20. Slots and holes improve brake fade but at the expense of braking force.
