Giant Spider Eating Bird

The Goliath Bird Eating Spider is the Worlds Biggest Spider by Mass. This giant spider is found in the rain forest regions of Northern South America and is considered the second largest spider in the world, as the giant huntsman spider holds claim to be the biggest spider in the world when taking into account it's leg span. Its name derives from Victorian era explorers who witnessed a spider biting and eating a hummingbird. Goliath Bird-eaters mature in 3 to 4 years and have an average life span of 15 to 25 years as opposed to their male counterparts who only live three to six years. The spiders lack tibial spurs, usually located on adult male spiders. These spurs serve to keep the fangs of the female immobilized during mating, so the female cannot eat the male which the female bird-eater is known to do. With a leg span of up to 12 inches, these spiders can weigh over 6oz. The spider does have fangs large enough to break the skin with a single spider bite, but the venom is relatively harmless, comparable to a wasp's sting and not deadly to humans. Contrary to its name, the Goliath Bird-eating spider does not normally eat birds. Its diet consists mainly of insects and other invertebrates, but has been seen feeding on rodents, frogs and lizards.
