GM 2-stroke V8 start and run (Higher quality)

Same as the other video, Detroit Diesel 8V-71, except from another angle. Some blue smoke visible from one side of the engine. :::: INFO ADDED :::: Many do NOT understand the meaning "2-stroke", which 98.5% of the world population do. The definition of "two\2-stroke" do NOT (I REPEAT; "DO NOT"!!) say wether the engine has valves, carburettor, injection or not, but rather how many strokes the piston has to take before new air\fuel enters the cylinder. The modern type two stroke diesel engine have valves, are direct injected, are supercharged\blowed and have full pressure oil lubrication. HOW A TWO STROKE DIESEL ENGINE WORK: 1. When the piston is at the top of its travel, the cylinder contains a charge of highly compressed air. Diesel fuel is sprayed into the cylinder by the injector and immediately ignites because of the heat and pressure inside the cylinder. This is the same process as 4-stroke diesels. 2. The pressure created by the combustion of the fuel drives the piston downward. This is the POWER STROKE. 3. As the piston nears the bottom of its stroke, all of the exhaust valves open. Exhaust gases rush out of the cylinder, relieving the pressure. 4. As the piston bottoms out, it uncovers the air intake ports. Pressurized air fills the cylinder, forcing out the remainder of the exhaust gases. 5. The exhaust valves close and the piston starts traveling back upward, re-covering the intake ports and compressing the fresh charge of air. This is the COMPRESSION STROKE. 6. As the piston nears the top of the cylinder, the cycle repeats with step 1.

Comments

  1. It's turbo
  2. i think the majority of locomotive engines are injected 2 strokes with valves. the pressure from the fuel injection initiates ignition.
  3. sounds very nice
  4. Its not the HP in the case of truck motors...  Its the Torque ... ive driven plenty of trucks with 450horsepower at 2200rpm but the torque is huge 1500-2000 ft-pounds at 1500rpm.and forced induction diesel 2-stroke engines are the king's of torque.
And just answer some of the question
Yes 2-stroke Diesel engines have exhaust valves
Yes they have pressure pumped oiling systems just like a 4stroke
and because they use Direct Injection like all diesels do, they do not waste fuel like petrol 2-stroke bikes which typically draw a mixture of Fuel and Oil into a dry crankcase.
Remember Hp = tq x rpm
an 18000cc motor has huge pistons conrods and crank therefore the have very low rev range.
  5. What makes a 2 cycle Diesel engine practical and efficient boils down to one thing: the modern turbocharger. It provides a steady supply of pressurized air to the cylinder that blows out ALL the exhaust and charges it afresh, thus eliminating the greatest weakness of 2 cycle engines; scavenging ALL of the exhaust gasses. As an added bonus, the system can be tuned to provide an excess of oxygen to the catalytic converter that it needs to do its job properly. Almost all modern 4 cycle Diesel truck engines already use turbos to save weight by allowing smaller engines to produce more power, so the technology is already mature. Marrying the turbo-diesel with 2 cycle operation is an elegant, and frankly brilliant, way to get even more power from a smaller, lighter power plant. I wish I had thought of it! I predict scaled-down versions will be appearing in automobiles within 5 years.
  6. 2 stroke? then what are those valves doing?
  7. jhon dere kkkk
  8. Its to bad they couldn't downsize those 2 strokes were neat but I think the main problem was weight and not enough range and linear torque curve compared to my 6 litre diesel turbo pick up . It weighs much less and puts out well over 400 hp and almost 1000 ft lbs torque with dohc and 4valves per cylinder and EEC control it is way more efficient. But I love the sound of an old 2 stroke Detroit! Nice vid of the oldies!
  9. 2 Stroke Diesel is like a big punch and 'fuck you' to the conventional gasoline 4 stroke engine.
  10. Its a long time since I recorded this video and dont remember the boat, but I believe this engine was recovered from a sunken passenger boat. I think the boat was taking in water and ran ashore so it wouldnt sink, however the damage it took was unrepairable, but engine was removed and stored for an unknown amount of time. What the engine is powering now, I do not know. Im sure it still out there...
  11. What does that engine power?
  12. so what are the downsides of 2 stroke DI diesel engines? there must be some if they dont use them. theoretically theyd have more power and less weight and complexity, but i cant think of drawbacks.
  13. If you were thinking about a direct injected gasoline engine, you dont have to look very far, because they do exist. Actually Direct injected gasoline two stroke engines are very commonly used in many modern marine outboard engines. That way you can time the fuel injection to right after the exhaust port has been closed. Therefore it doesnt waste any fuel through the exhaust, however they still use a total loss lubrication system from a separate oil tank which is not very "green"...
  14. i guess i am! i was imagining that they could run just as clean as 4 strokes so they could overcome green issues.
  15. They are, thats why (the "modern") two-stroke diesel are just as, or even more complicated then a four-stroke diesel. Even the big ol' semidiesels were direct* injected. The "Diesel Engine" were always direct (or pre chamber\indirect) injected. If not, you cant control the timing and have lots of pre-ignition problems. This is called pinging, or dieseling. You are still comparing the two stroke gas engine with two stroke diesel; they are Very different. Even the lubrication system!
  16. why they dont make a 2 stroke direct injection diesels?
  17. Had one in a Dozer . They have a breather in the middle of each valve cover. These were never eco-friendly . They would suck a couple of quarts of oil a day. The Detroit makes a mean noise and is a work horse . Good to hear one running.
  18. Instead on over explaining the term "2 stroke" why not just add the work "diesel" title and let it be?
  19. they should put a tuned pipe on each cylinder and that thing will make like 2000hp or more lol
  20. I guess very many have gone in that trap, even I did... The first 2-stroke diesel I saw was an 8V71 in a fishing boat (repower), probably from eary 60's that originally came from a tank. I denied it was two stroke just by looking at the valve-covers. I was wrong... Nowdays its my favorite engine :)
