Hitting in the NFL | The Old NFL vs. the New NFL

Due to the concussion lawsuits, these past 10 years have seen fans watching an increasingly lower amount of big hits in the NFL. People are attacking the sport of football. People who don't actually give a damn about the sport or care for the integrity of the game say its to dangerous to play. Football was intended to be violent. As were sports like boxing and hockey. People who box get punched in the face repeatedly. People who surf 50 ft waves die doing so. Its a risk these people are willing to take. They are willing to take this risk because they love what they do, its an adrenalin rush like no other, these people cant get enough of it. They are willing to take the risks. Well football is the same way. Its a risk the current players simply need to take. People need to realize that a receiver running a seam route over the middle of the field is supposed to get hit, its supposed to hurt. It is literally a Safeties job to hit a receiver who is running a route into his zone. He is supposed to hit him so he doesn't catch the ball. The refs throw flags now if a hit just looks hard. The men that play this game are the biggest fastest strongest athletes in the world. People who say all the players have to do is change their hitting techniques and that will solve the problem are wrong. The game moves so fast it is literally impossible to avoid hitting a player hard or always avoid hitting a player in the head. It will happen, its unavoidable no matter how much they try to make it avoidable. Take this play for example, a 6'4 LB launches himself at a 5'9 receivers torso the same simultaneous second that receiver ducks... BOOM head to head contact. The refs throw the flag. Now what's happening is the NFL is putting the game in the hands of the officials just because they are being hypersensitive to this safety issue. So now what's happening is the game is being left in the hands of the officials for an unintentional hard hit or hit to the head which was completely unavoidable. So because they are trying to take away the violence it is causing for more and more games to be left in the hands of the refs. This is what frustrates me more then anything, the referees judging games for what is supposed to be a good football play. The whole flow of games is being ruined by officiating and it all stems from the fact that the NFL is being over sensitive about the violence of this game. The NFL was in denial. They lied to former players about the dangers of this game. They didn't inform former players about possible future head trauma and side effects from pills. It was wrong of them to do that. The former players had a right to sue the league because they weren't informed. The difference between the former players and the current players is that the current players are fully aware of the possible future consequences they may face. There is no excuse now, they have no right to sue. People who think the CTE issue is an epidemic are trusting these doctors to much. Doctors are always hypersensitive about these things because its there job. That's fine I respect that. But they are throwing out these stats scaring people like the ones who disagree with this vid. They say a certain large percentage of players have showed signs of CTE, but to what severity? Such a small percentage of players have SUPPOSEDLY injured themselves because of it. I don't know what happens behind closed doors, but from what I can see on ESPN there are TONS of former players who retired 15 years ago who are just fine laughing it up on television functioning like a normal human being. So until I don't see Hundreds of former players on air who seem to be just fine, I'm going to look at CTE as just a minor rare risk. I think its fantastic doctors have made people aware of the issue, because now people are fully aware of the risks, but that shouldn't mean they have to change the rules. All it should mean is that the NFL will make the effort to teach players proper tackling techniques as much as possible. They should be using these hi tech helmets to reduce head injuries. That's how they should be fixing the safety of the game, not changing the rules. With the new techniques and new helmets less head injuries should happen. If a player gets hit in the head so be it. Its football, it happens. So finally my point, if these players don't want to take the risks don't play, its that simple. Would they really be willing to give up the fame and fortune playing the game they love for some mediocre middle class job? I know I wouldn't. Its football, its a violent game. 1. new nfl is better because it's safer
  2. Ray Lewis, last of the old school players, wait now there's JJ Watt......... I guess there'll always be someone. But it sure has gotten watered down.
  3. I think after every game, you should receive free physical check ups and treatments. It's a sport, not life. It's supposed to fun. People like the aggression and violence. But, you should be able to live after football. That's why you need treatment and checkups.
  4. So basically people aren't happy because they cannot see players getting seriously injured/ko/killed anymore?
  5. i agree with you 100%
  6. A kid on my team broke his neck and died in tackle football this is real i miss him.
  7. Ahhh, when football was football. Not the pussy game played today
  8. While E Is the most caring person ever I mean I read his comments and cried. I subbed to him and I cried more when I was the first one😭
  9. You have no idea about how much I agree with you. I played football almost all my life, and it's sad to see the NFL go in this direction. It pisses me off to watch as a defender making a good play get penalized for doing his job. College players getting ejected for making a play, and NFL players getting suspended, fined and penalized for making a play. It pisses me off that all the big hits that I have watched growing up are now illegal. We need to find a way to tell the NFL and Roger Goodell that the NFL now, isn't what we want.
  10. The old NFL hit waaaay harder
  11. I think you misunderstand the meaning of "politically correct" and are over using it in your arguments. Players are bigger, faster and stronger today than they ever were. The damage that is done to players (who often times don't last more than a few years) is enormous. Many of them have very few options to making a decent living once they leave and the cost of the taking care of their medical needs can be tremendous. I think that most of the people who complain about "the NFL today is not what it used to be" really don't care about the players. It's just entertainment to them.
  12. I will make 3 days non-stop Party when tom Bradley leaves football , he is one of the biggest points why football gets into the gay-way
  13. Rodger Goodell needs his ass fired!
  14. 9:37. I'm sorry, but how the FUCK can you not catch that?
  15. wow
  16. I wish I could have seen the old NFL
  17. It's okay to tackle, but you have To understand when a safety delivers a big hit to a receiver the receiver can actually get badly hurt. You can fuck up their brain or body for what...so you can beat your chest and look like a savage for five seconds when that receiver can be hurt for life. Think of the child of that receiver seeing his father die young because he has a brain disease, don't completely wreck me in the comments but you wouldn't want to be in the hospital bed with CTE because if that one hit that gave the safety an adrenaline rush for five seconds.
  18. Man, so much of this I agree with, but also there are some parts I do not.

I'm all in, about players not knowing the risks before, they were told to play even with injuries (concussions) or they were threatened if they didn't want to. That's sad.
I'm about the deal you make when you put on shoulder pads and a helmet, you KNOW it IS going to cost you. Memory loss, arthrosis, arthritis, back pain, joint pain, increased aggressiveness, everything, but YOU CHOOSE if its worth it. I don't like coaches who throw injured players back on the field, against their will. Let HIM know the risk, let HIM make the call. He won't blame anyone if something happens, but himself.

BUT... I sorta like how players can't use the helmet as a weapon now. Why? Although yes, this sport's violence is what makes it so appealing, leading with the head (or crown) has made up the WORST injuries I've seen. It has to be regulated, it has to be judged as:
"if its a little contact and/or plainly incidental, NO FLAG.
If the player was blatantly aiming for another players head with his own, just trying to hurt him, FLAG."

We like violence, we like hits, but don't play to injure someone, even on the street that is a crime. When you injure someone consciously it IS a crime, why wouldn't it be penalized on a football field?

I dislike what I'm seeing now from football players. The pussiness.
I got hurt a lot of times, every time, every play. For 13 years of football, I now pay consequences. But I'd do it again if I had the chance.

I'd blow every joint, tear every muscle and break every bone that I did, just for the joy of playing.
  19. Amen I am 13 and a great player on the field and I hope when I'm older I can play in the NFL... but by the time I'm 20 the sport is either going to be full of pansies who don't want to hit or just discontinued because of the safety problems. I say we have back the old violent hitting!!💪
  20. There are rules that are good then there are rules that are just dumb
