How Australia Impounded the World's Second-Largest Fishing Trawler

Super Trawler: Enormous Dutch commercial fishing vessel seized by the Australian government For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=64862 When Dutch super-trawler The Margiris was given the go-ahead to catch millions of dollars worth of fish in Australian waters, her owners didn't realise they were sailing straight into a bureaucratic nightmare. This report charts the extraordinary course of events that culminated in the world's second largest trawler being left stranded and impotent thousands of miles from her native Holland. The Margiris' owners were assured by Australia that they had permission to fish its seas. "Literally what they said was, we will back you up no matter what happens, if you follow the rules. And we said we can accept that of course". But what the ship's owners hadn't counted on was a perfect storm of political protest that brought environmental groups and recreational fishers together in a campaign that even threatened to destabilise the Australian government. In a bold move, the government sided with the people and anchored the super trawler for good. "We've got no idea what the rules are now!" exclaims ship owner, Gerry Geen. So was this democracy in action, or political incompetence? 1. let it fish,it's working within the quotas so it won't be killing any more fish than would of been killed without it here, people are so dumb
  2. Rules are simple, limit the size of ships. Cannot fish outside your countries waters. As far as the Dutch trawler, Scrap it.
  3. I wish I could be optimistic but, as a species, we are fucked along with the planet.
  4. He wants to know the rules, don't be greedy bastards!
  5. They are selfish and made money but they do not want to share with small fisherman !!!!!!
  6. the question that should be asked about the government allowing ships like this into Australian waters , is who was getting kickbacks , because you can bet your life some grubby little turd was getting money
  7. greedy old businessmen trying to say super trawlers don't destroy fishing grounds is complete bs and every fisherman has known for a long time and now the scientific research shows it.
  8. thank God the Austrailian Government sided with the Austrailian citizens, unlike the Government of Trinidad and Tobago that never listens to their citizens
  9. Im from port Lincoln i remember this...
  10. haha
  11. It is like a third world decision making. Poor Garry and his partners. I know how bitter the third world decision making is. Till the end of the video I still dont get the answer as to why the government allowed the super trawler to come to Australia in the first place, only to let her sit, rusting there at the port. Could it be that it was all staged in such way by the Australian Government to make the world think of Australia as a champion in advocating environmental protection. As the narrator puts it, " the government decision was right and it was seen as a victory in sustainable fishing, not just in Australia but around the globe"
  12. Did you noticed how
    the moron said international market???
    Thats global stinking economy.
They create large unemployment to controll the market by cheap fish.
That moron should be forced to eat nothing but happy tuna from a happy tuna can.
The bi net are selective and only catch eatable fish
So lock him up at happy tuna factory
    and feed him cheap
disgusting happy tuna in a can for 15 years.
To vacum the seafloor is no new invention europeans did it in the Atlantic before he was born.
He is so stupid what he even brags about it and call wise australian desicions
    third world country.
He are clearly the flying dutchman
bounded to eat happy tuna from a can for the rest of his life and nothing more!
  13. Fishing on this scale is totally immoral. It is destroying the sea
  14. The Japanese are raping the oceans far more than this boat could ever do.
  15. Nobody is pointing out the fact that redbait, mackerel, etc are not table fish. These fish are munched up to form 'Frankenfoods' or are used for aquaculture food. So if you ignorant fucks didn't eat crap food or support benign industries ' Supertrawlers' like these would not exist. Final point, if this alarms you maybe you should research what's happening off Chile, in Melanesia or the South Atlantic.
  16. That Super Trawler would have cleaned out the Fish Population and Cornered the Market in the Area and Raped the Local Population on Paying more for the Fish they would eat.. Nothing but a bunch of Crooked Bastards.
  17. I am for the trawlers. They provide safe food for consumption. Fish that sit in the sun rooting are not safe for consumption. Look at all the fish that sit in the sun all day. They start to grow worms and diseases from fly's.  This ONE trawler will provide safe food for thousand of people who a hungry. The fish caught on this trawler are going to people who need to eat. Their not killing the fish and throwing them back into the ocean. Children are eating these healthy fish.
  18. Those little Greenfag boats SHOULD be mistaken for Somali Pirates boats. OOOOPS!!! sorry. We fed the fish though.
  19. Fuck it get her done!!!!!
  20. 'The Dutch are experts at this kind of fishing". Wiping up fish populations and destroying their habitats from an area and then moving on. The profiteers might call it "efficiency" but it is in fact highly destructive to ocean habitats. It is not just "environmentalists" who are against these mega fishing factories, but smaller fishing boats and sport fishermen who are left with barren fishing grounds after these mega-trawlers move on.
