Now obviously... it's not something I eat every day, or even once a week. And having LIVED in China, there were big concerns over food quality constantly - but one ingredient in particular consistently drew the most attention - MSG. What is MSG and what does it actually do to you? What MSG Does In Your Body I hope this stuff doesn't scare you or deter you from eating your favorite greasy Chinese Friday-night takeout, but here it goes: MSG Can Lead to Type II Diabetes, Obesity & Heart Disease In Mice In the first study, researchers found that injecting mice with MSG led to "significant inflammation, central obesity and type II diabetes." MSG Causes Cell Death - The More MSG, The More Neurons Died (Bye Bye Braincells) MSG Another study wanted to see what would happen if MSG was injected into mouse neurons - with differing concentrations of MSG. Then the amount of cell injury/death was analyzed 24 hours later. What the researchers found was a bit shocking: the amount of cell death was directly related to how much MSG was injected - at 3, 30, or 300 uM, % cell death was 25%, 40%, or 50%. THEN, they wanted to see if MSG's damage to cells was dependent on time - so they were injected with another dose and cells were observed incubating over time. 30 minutes after injecting with MSG, swelling was observed. After two hours there was severe swelling, and after 12 hours, the neurons had ruptured. MSG And Headaches Another study wanted to test for adverse effects (like headaches), after consuming MSG. They took 14 men and they drank sugar free soda that either had MSG or a placebo. The group that had the MSG (vs placebo) had a "significant increase in reports of headaches and muscle tenderness in the head." Brain Cell Quality in Rats A fourth study had newborn rats that were injected with MSG once every other day until the 10th day - and then compared to a control group given a normal saline solution. After about half a year, the rats were killed and researchers looks at certain cells in the hypothalamus involved in growth and development - and found that the number, length, weight of cells all decreased in the MSG group. Bye bye brain cells! And MSG In The Brain Cells of Cute Little Hamsters msg 2 Another study done on Siberian hamsters found that they can actually go into a state of mini hibernation every day to conserve energy - but by injecting them with MSG, it reduced how many hamsters could enter the state (and how deep) by 50% - by damaging a certain area of the brain. In addition, these hamsters tended to be fatty in general. In the picture above you can see how the MSG dramatically decreased the fiber density of the brain cells in this region. When In Doubt... Use This Principle Now every once in a while you'll meet someone who says, "Oh, C'MON Alex don't be such a hippie. Artificial sweeteners haven't been proven to cause any health problems." Maybe you're investigating some kind of additive that you aren't quite sure about... but does that mean you should still consume it and risk it with your own body? One principle I follow quite a lot is the "precautionary principle" which means if you don't know, then DON'T take a chance. If you DON'T know whether something is good or bad - then avoid it. If you DON'T know if a chemical has been tested or not - avoid it. If you DON'T know if a supplement will help or not - avoid it and save the $50 on the bottle. If you DON'T know... then don't take the risk. Let someone else be the guinea pig, err... hamster. What's The Verdict on MSG? & Today's Tiny Habit Today's tiny habit is simple: remove MSG as much as possible from the foods you consume. It's not always easy when you're eating out, but it's easy to avoid if we're buying boxed foods. It's also sometimes hidden under the term "flavor enhancer" - so watch out for that. And as to whether or not you should continue eating your favorite Chinese food... well that one's up to you :-). - Alex Sources: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18178378 | http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2802046/ | http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19438927 | http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21158092 | In hamsters: http://ajpregu.physiology.org/content/294/1/R255

  1. sugar is worse then msg why not inject sugar in to some baby hush puppy's and see if they get trippy after some time
  2. Good god Olive Gardens Minestrone soup has msg in it. Sad because that soup is awesome tasting. Crazy headache right now and I just got done throwing up. Never again.
  3. There is MSG in just about everything not just Chinese. I've seen in American food canned food Progresso clam chowder. You can't blame everything on Chinese food.

In American food it can be known as sodium.
  4. What a load of it. MSG is natural. This video is pure CR.. There are not real Science only rubbish that has no basis. There were no real tests and the ones described are certainly not significant and would not be accepted by any real Scientist. Lets just avoid everything and stop eating or drinking that will work - your a moron.
  5. MSG is an addictive spice thats the other reason they use it in things like chicfila "food" & potato chips, bet ya cant eat just one... ugh. addictive food = fat ppl
  6. I wonder why so many people in japan are healthy and lived long years if MSG was so bad. I think your video lacks research. Ive watched a lot of msg videos and their arguments on why it is not bad for you is stronger than ur arguments. Our body produces glutamate and msg is just a salt form. It is part of our reward system as a neurotransmitter. U havent provided enough evidence why they give some people headaches. Some people have glutamate sensitivity. I think you are just adding to the myth.
  7. Lol greenscreen
  8. Please explain why Chinese are more fit than these obese Americans?
  9. MSG is naturally occuring delicious molecule. I actually cook with it at home. I never experience any side effects.
  10. Ching Chang Chong
  11. I can't believe people believe this.......
  12. False info. Our bodies naturally produce glutamate (non salt form of MSG)
And people feel bad because they expect to.
It is healthy at normal doses. (30mg per KG of body weight)
    you can't trust the internet.
  13. You find loads more videos saying its safe than dangerous, I suspects
they are sponsored. I get massive pounding headaches and have to lay
down in a dark room if I have too much MSG.

I read the labels a never buy it if its added to food.

Any amount appears to be too much as it builds up in my system. It kills
neurons makes crap food taste edible, its used to kill dogs in the
    Philippines.

You're welcome to it, but keep it away from me.

This video is very wise in introducing the precautionary principle.

You know not so long ago doctors and nurses used to give patients tobacco cigarettes as a way of dealing with a patient in shock.
  14. Wow! I'm definitely going to stop injecting myself with MSG. Maybe I'm using it wrong?
  15. In the mice studies, they use an inhumanely large concentration of msg injected into the mice to get neurons to die. You can achieve the same effect if you use an inhumanely large concentration of salt solution injected into the mice. I think the public has been mislead by these researchers. MSG was discovered in Japan and the Japanese remains the biggest consumers of MSG. I wonder how most Japanese live to a ripe old age living a fully active life without Alzheimer's disease if MSG was so bad for the brain. If the meat industry finds MSG is competing with the use of meat and started to bad mouth MSG then , I think they have achieved their agenda. You can cook anything without meat and have it taste like it has tons of meat cooked with it. That's what MSG does. In Japan, the older generation uses very little meat in their cooking and instead adds MSG into their foods. The result = more active and longer life span than it is in those in the MSG-fearing West. MSG is harmful only if you overdose it just as salt is harmful if you overdose it. Infact, everything is harmful if you overdose it. IYou probably had heard frequently that potassium is good for you and everyone should have more. Well you can design an experiment injecting an insane amount of potassium chloride into mice and they'll die instantly. Infact, that's what they use in execution by lethal injection. You can also do the same with concentrated sodium chloride solution too but the prisoner would suffer a longer death process. Anyway, the West has been misinformed about MSG, probably as a result of the meat industry's propaganda. And now, every doctors, from naturopaths to allopaths in the West are fearing MSG like poison. Why don't they replace potassium with MSG in lethal injections I wonder?????
  16. What a bunch of babble bullshit.
  17. This all bullshit.
  18. Why not injecting mice with honey, milk, potato salad orange juice or olive oil to test the effects on their body?

While we don't consume msg or honey by injection, that experiment is irrelevant.
  19. nice explnation about msg
  20. Any replacement for Msg?
