Jan Zelezny - 95.34m and 95.66m -- Sheffield 29/08/1993

Jan Zelezny broke the javelin world record on 06/04/1993 with a distance of 95.54m in South Africa. Off the back of his recent world title victory, Zelezny competed in Sheffield and in ideal conditions he threw just short of the record in round 2 but exceeded it by 12cm in round 3. At the time of posting this video these two throws are the second and third longest in history behind his 98.48m set in 1996.

  2. whats
    that.
    huge throw 95.66
  3. I like how a very good athlete is wearing a McDonald's logo. The irony
  4. great
  5. There is no evidence of the 95.34 mark on the IAAF site...do you know why?
  6. Consider this - Zelezny along with many other mega distance jav throwers over 90M, were ALL heavy smokers. I have spoken with several of the world's greatest javelin throwers up close, from around the world, several of whom were cigarette smokers, or lived with a heavy smoker during the years of their 90+ meter throws, and also know of one 90+ meter thrower who admitted to an acquaintance of mine in confidence that he ran into tunnels in Europe's stadiums between throws/rounds to smoke one or two cigarettes during the 80's because if he did not ramp up his smoking, his distances dropped off. If dozens of medal winning athletes (post 2005) are to be banned for a variety of performance enhancing drugs this week, is it also time that someone open the Pandora's Box to the byproduct effects of smoking in athletics? Oh... Of course not. The IAAF could never ban smoking in athletes as it would also mean the European Union IAAF Athletics Diamond League stadiums would be mostly empty of fans due to such a smoking ban, or how it would put all athletes inside plastic bubble-sealed biosphere compounds while active in the sport? So, billions in ticket sales and sponsor dollars lost and the sport itself, one which promotes the ever-dying liberty concept of individualism - destroyed? So, perhaps the absurdity of banning smoking promotes a general acceptance of cigarette smoking in athletics and provides a convenient "catch all" excuse to allow this situation to continue indefinitely? Cigarette smoking increases serum hemoglobin and also increases total lung capacity, contributing to enhanced athletic performance, and weight loss. Can there be a new test to prove athletes smoke to purposely "perform better" than their peers?  Should there be? Is the IAAF in fact inconsistent here in not performing (but perhaps long overdue it should be) pre-competition gender testing of athletes? Or, is that not going to matter soon with America's big 'transgender' movement? (Maybe Bruce can fill us all in on that one?) The IAAF working to ban anyone for the laundry list of performance enhancing compounds needs to drop the hypocrisy if they are going to continue to leave out the stimulant effects of smoking in athletic performances...  Since corporate elites make billions from cigarette sales, and big pharmaceutical companies financially benefit even more from selling prescription drugs to people who get mentally wacked out and physically destroyed from chronic smoking, expect cigarette smoking among the athletics community to prevail... Welcome to the New World Order.
  7. Great man....but he hate Seppo Räty
  8. If he would've thrown the javelin straight, not across the sector, it would have been well over 100m
  9. No modern carbon fibre javelin either .. just a good old Sanvik Champion, not to mention his world record 98.48 done with an OTE (red/silver) jav .. quite incredible!
  10. Love watching Zelezny throw! Was lucky enough to see him compete at the 2001 worlds and throw a 92.8m for the gold, while Aki Parviainen threw a 91.31m
