Their name in Korean, Bangtan Sonyeondan (Hangul: 방탄소년단; Hanja: 防彈少年團), and Japanese, Bōdan Shōnendan (防弾少年団?), both translate to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts". They debuted on June 13, 2013, with the song "No More Dream" from their first album, 2 Cool 4 Skool, for which they won several "New Artist of the Year" awards including those at the 2013 MelOn Music Awards and Golden Disk Awards, and the 2014 Seoul Music Awards. A year after their debut, they received major bonsang awards for their subsequent albums Dark & Wild and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1. BTS continued rising to widespread prominence with their Most Beautiful Moment in Life trilogy, with The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 and The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever both debuting inside the Billboard 200.[1] The Most Beautiful Moment In Life, Part 2 also charted at number one on the Billboard World Albums Chart and remained there for multiple weeks, making BTS the first K-Pop act to achieve that feat.[2] The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever went on to win the coveted 'Album of the Year' award at the 2016 Melon Music Awards. This win marked BTS's first daesang, or 'Grand Prize', since their debut.[3] The group continued to surpass themselves with the release of their second full album, Wings, which charted at #1 on iTunes in over 26 countries.[4] The album also debuted at 26 on the Billboard 200, which marked the highest chart rank for a K-Pop album ever, as well as made BTS the first K-Pop act to log three entries onto the chart, and the first to spend more than one week on the chart.[5][6] In their native South Korea, Wings sold 681,924 albums in its debut month, breaking the record for the highest first month sale for an album ever in Gaon history, as well as is the best selling album in Gaon history thus far.[7] The album's title single, "Blood Sweat & Tears" (Korean: 피 땀 눈물) became the group's first domestic number one hit on the Gaon Digital Chart.[8] To date, BTS's discography has sold an estimated 2.7 million albums worldwide. Known for their large social media presence, BTS were named by Forbes as the most retweeted artist on Twitter in March 2016.[9] Following that, Twitter launched its first ever K-Pop Twitter emoji featuring BTS.[10] In October 2016, Billboard placed BTS as #1 on their Social 50 chart, making them the first Korean group to top the chart.[11] Also known for their large international fanbase, having performed and sold out tours in Asia, Europe, Australia, North America, and South America, BTS's outstanding performances won them the Best World Performer award in the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Labeled as the "Kings of K-pop"[9][10][11][12][13] and "Nation's Boy Band,"[14] the members’ involvement in composing and producing their own music, most notably G-Dragon, has earned the group respect and praise from the music industry.[15] Since the Gaon Chart began tracking sales, Big Bang — including members' solo releases - has sold over 93 million records, and with the previous releases including the sales from Music Industry Association of Korea (MIAK), The Korea Music Content Industry Association (KMCIA) and international sales they have sold over 137 million records, with over 130 million digital singles and 6.7 million albums in Korea, Japan, and the rest of Asian continent, making them the best-selling digital group of all-time in Asia.[16][17][18][19] They have won numerous awards and set several records, including being the act who spent the most months at number one on the Gaon Chart and the most weeks at number one on Melon, besides being the all-time best-selling artist in Cyworld. Big Bang was the first Korean artist to enter Forbes Magazine's Celebrity 100 and the 30 under 30 most influential musicians in the world lists. Citing their global popularity and contribution to K-pop, The Washington Post have described them as "the biggest band in Asia"[20] and the Hollywood Reporter as "the biggest boy band in the world. WHo is EXO: Exo (Korean: 엑소; stylized as EXO) is a South Korean-Chinese boy group based in Seoul. Formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2011, the group debuted in 2012 with twelve members separated into two subgroups, Exo-K and Exo-M, performing music in Korean and Mandarin respectively. Exo's first album XOXO (2013), which contained the breakthrough hit "Growl", was a critical and commercial success, winning both Disk Daesang at the 28th Golden Disk Awards and Album of the Year at the 15th Mnet Asian Music Awards.
