There are various species of elephants, including Asian and Indian but they are much smaller than the African elephants. The African elephant is the king among the giants on land. The largest African elephant weighed 13.5 tons (27,000 pounds). (The largest registered Indian and Asian elephants were both 11.3 ft (3.43 meters) tall). The world record holder weighed this much and stood 13ft/4m tall at the shoulder. It would take 165 full-grown men to make up the same weight as the world's record African elephant. But there’s even more: the largest elephant that ever lived was huge, taller than your two-story Mayfair flat and almost as tall as the average telephone pole. Evolved from smaller Siberian mammoths, the Songhua River Mammoth roamed Northern China and Inner Mongolia during the Middle Pleistocene about 280,000 years ago. It survived into the Late Pleistocene but died out well before the end of the last ice age. A skeleton of a large male one can be currently found in a Japanese museum. It is 17 ft tall and 30 ft long from tip of the trunk to tip of the tail.
