Christie's auction house looks to break a record when it sells the largest orange colored diamond at its "Magnificent Jewels" sale in Geneva next month. Simply known as "The Orange", the 14.82 karat diamond is thought to be the biggest fancy vivid gem on the market. "It's the largest orange diamond of its kind in the world. The largest stone prior to this of a similar color was not even six karats and in this case it's close to 15 karats. So, it's a very important stone," explained Rahul Kadakia, the Head of Jewelry for Christie's, on Friday (October 11) during an exhibition of the diamond in New York. "The color is vivid orange -- vivid being the strongest saturation in a color diamond. If you look at the stone closely, you know, the color is almost the peel of an orange," said Kadakia. "It's going to go on to make a world-record price." "The estimate is between $17- and $20 million (USD). It's going to go on to make quite comfortably towards the $20 million mark, which will make it $1.3-$1.5 million per karat." "It's great because, you know, stones of this nature of this color are not just looked at for their size and color and clarity and price per karat, they're looked at as works of art. You know, this is indeed a great work of in the world of gems and jewelry," finished Kadakia. The Orange will headline the sale of over 280 lots in the Geneva sale on November 12th. Among the other items under the auction hammer will be pieces from the collection of style icon Helene Rochas as well as 130 karats of Colombian emeralds from tin magnate Simon Patino, known as the 'Andean Rockefeller'. The total sale of the jewels auction is expected to exceed $100 million.
