It’s leg-span measures up to 11 inches and weight over 170 grams. It belongs to the tarantula family theraphosidae. Although it was called the goliath bird eating spider, this species of spider rarely eat birds, and was named when an early engraving was found depicting one of these spiders eating a hummingbird. This species is considered to be the largest spider by mass, but is second to the huntsman spider in leg-span, which grow to exceed 12 inches in leg-span.
