FILM DESCRIPTION: This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy. 15. I was treated like fucking dog shit in the 1970's through the 1980's all bec I had a simple slow learning disability. They actually sent me to a few "special" schools to better the help I needed. LOL. Those schools I was forced to go to were 80+% uncontrolable/out-of-control violent kids. They mixed the slow learner kids with the criminal kids. They did that shit back then! The gave the students an A just for showing up, behaving and showing effort. I was basically a valedictorian. Lmfao. Before I went to those fucked up schools I was held back a few times so I dropped out of school in the 9th grade. I never even went back to get my GED. I'm now well off and have everything I want & need; I'm married and living like a king. I never did shit with my life except party and go surfing when the waves were nice. I'm southern white anglo-saxon protestant and I will never ever see a hard rough poor day in this lifetime. I'm willing to bet anything all those teachers I used to have live like filthy disgusting street niggers, living paycheck-to-paycheck. ROFL.

I don't know if I have this right or not, but I read somewhere back when this movie was first released into theaters, that Cher and Eric went to a fast food restaurant for lunch during a break in filming. Eric, in full prosthetic makeup, was being made fun of by some girl who obviously did not recognize Cher either. Cher, true to her character here, jumped right on the kid.
