Massive Sea Monster

This massive sea creature the diver discovered is the largest known species of jelllyfish is the beautiful lion's mane jellyfish. This spectacular specimen is confined to the cold boreal waters of the arctic, northern Atlantic and pacific oceans. In 1870 on the shore of the Massachusetts bay, the largest recorded specimen was found. The bell measured 7 feet 6 inches and had tentacles over 120 feet long, which made it longer than a blue whale, and one of the longest known animals in the world. In 1864 a bootlace worm measuring a 180 feet washed up in Scotland. However bootlace worms ca n stretch several times their natural length, but more than likely did not grow to that length. typically the jelly-fish reaches about 8.5feet with tentacles up to 98 feet and has a bell that is divided into 8 lobes, giving it, its 8 point star appearance. The lion's mane jellyfish provides food and protection to a number of species including shrimp, medusa fish and juvenile prowfish. Their predators include seabirds, larger fish, and other jellyfish., the jellyfish is also almost exclusively the diet of leather back sea turtles. Their life span of a year consists of four different stages, the larva, polyp, ephyrae and medusa stage. Coming into contact with a healthy individual can be fatal, but most encounters just cause temporary pain and redness. In July of 2010, in rye, new hampshire, about 150 people were reported to have been stung by the remains of a lion's mane jellyfish that had broken up into countless pieces.because of the size of the species, it is possible that one single specimen caused such a mass incident.
