Mike Powell - World Long Jump Record 1991

At the 1991 World Championships in Athletics (Tokyo), he broke Bob Beamon's almost 23-year-old long jump world record by 5 cm (2 inches), leaping 8.95 m (29 ft 4¼ in). The world record still stands, making Powell the fourth person since 1900 to hold the record for over 20 years. His feat earned him the James E. Sullivan Award and BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 1991 Footage from BBC

  1. Greatest rivalry in athletics? Ovette v Coe was pretty good. Lewis v Johnson wudv bin good had Canadian not cheated in 88
  2. I believe the most important part of the jump is the take off, by that I mean the acceleration approx. 5 meters before the jump. I feel this is the most important factor in the jump because it looks from the video that it's a major propel on the jump creating more kinetic energy for a longer jump.
  3. Its freaky that a human can jump best part off 9 m. was down an athlertrics track today and some teens were jumping 5.5m and i thought that was impressive lol
  4. These cats were damn near jumping out of the box.
  5. I'm 14 and I can jump almost 5 meters , is that good ? (I never had training , actually I'm most of the time at home in front of my pc)
  6. Beamon´s jump was perfect, this one was not.
  7. Carl Lewis's reaction to Powell's WR jump ... priceless
  8. Carl Lewis will always be the best long jumper in history! To still perform this way well into his prime is phenomenal. He also broke the world record in the 100 meter run during this meet.
  9. I can barely jump over a puddle ;_;
  10. Go back and do your Homework guys!
  11. Powell was taking better drugs it seems
  12. that was an epic battle.
  13. What's the song at the end?
  14. I remember watching this on TV - I was 6 years old. Don't think it will be beaten in my lifetime...
  15. long jumpers today barely jump 8m
  16. Carl Lewis is one cool dude!
  17. Still world record and it will will be a long time :)
  18. I'm not a track coach but I get to play one here....
I just watched the video of Bob Beaman
    and then this one.

What I noticed about Beaman was how high both of his feet were
    at the extension
they were as high as his head.
Powell's feet look to be only 1/2 as high and not extended together

and Beaman took off like a drag race
but Powell did a couple steps of lopping before speed up

it would be nice to compare their speed at take off.
  19. watching Rio 2016, they're 2 feet short of this perfection
