3. If I were to shall we say, reboot the basic background story, the first thing I'd do is flesh out Nightmare Moon's reasons for being. Luna's reasons for going off the rails is because the ponies spent all of their time in the day while sleeping through the night just doesn't seem like that would be enough. Granted that working the night shift for thousands of years could be hazardous to ones sanity, but I don't buy it. Imagine for a moment, a scenario where Luna is married to King Sombra, and even had their own little family. Now the idea that Luna's own children might be spending more time with Celestia then their own mother would be plenty to fuel bitter envy, but I don't think that's quite enough. Lets throw in an affair between King Sombra and Celestia. Now we have more then enough to tip the scale, not just for Luna, but for King Sombra as well. Events would cascade out of control, and would still fit into much of the existing cannon.
