The sea wasp jellyfish, aka the box jellyfish, has a lethal sting & is found along the northern Australian coast all the way up to southeast Asia. The sea wasp has been described as the "most lethal jellyfish in the world," whose sting can kill within two to five minutes, with your children being at the highest risk of death. If you or your loved ones are stung by a sea wasp, here's how to survive. What is it? The sea wasp, or Chironex fleckeri, is an umbrella-shaped jellyfish that is capable of swimming faster than most jellyfish, clocking in at speeds of up to six meters per minute. They have a total of 24 eyes that can detect light and dark and have tentacles that can reach up to 9.8 ft (3 m) in length. They're known for their fatal sting, which produces excruciating pain accompanied by an intense burning sensation. Its sting has been compared to being branded with a red hot iron. Where are they located? As you can see here, sea wasps can be found on the northern Australian coast up to the waters of the Philippines and Vietnam. How will it kill you? The venom in a sea wasp sting causes your skin cells to become porous enough to cause hyperkalemia, which can lead to cardiovascular collapse and death within two to five minutes. Swimmers that are stung may undergo cardiac arrest or drown before they can even swim back to shore or their boat. But the sea wasp's venom is so powerful that even if the victim does manage to get to safety, they may still die before an ambulance or professional medical help can reach them. How to survive: Until recently, the application of vinegar was a recommended treatment method, although this is no longer the case as it can cause more venom to be released into your body. Therefore, once the sting victim manages to get to safety, the first step that may be required is CPR. Then the adhering sea wasp tentacles must be carefully removed using protected hands or tweezers. All the while, professional medical help must be contacted and en route to the victim in order for them to administer the proper jellyfish anti venom. So what is a common nickname for the sea wasp? The sea wasp is also known as the suckerpunch not only because their sting is rarely detected until the venom is injected, but also because they are almost transparent in color. So would you rather...be stung by a sea wasp? Or get stuck in quicksand?
