MUST WATCH- BIG YOUTH FOOTBALL HIT.

Big Youth Football Hit.

  1. I don't want to second guess the intentions of a coach I don't know, especially not having been there. We can all, in our watered down, politically correct, lawsuit driven, hover parent inspired world, sit here in hindsight and judge this volunteer for his actions. So I wouldn’t jump on the bandwagon to bash him, especially because a few factors here mitigate what's wrong a little. Few things I don't like. 1. Its a collision drill. The smartest and winningest football coaches I've met from gigantic highschool programs in Texas to college programs will tell you this is just dumb. As a matter of fact, one clinic I sat in was a really well known college coach and he describes this drill to the letter. You put one kid on this side and another on the other side and tell them to run into each other. It teaches nothing, and has no real application an any game except for the FB hitting the hole against a charging linebacker. 2. Guessing the age of the 2 boys knowing they all look a little bigger in pads I'd say they are 6 or 7 (minus the manchild standing up the background). This an age where acclimating them to contact in a slow gradual way is even more important, and he's running pretty much a controlled bull in the ring. 3. #26 is the ball carrier. In what world would that kid just run into the defender? (again sans the FB dive play)? He just wouldn't. He'd juke, or pick a different angle. This drill has no real world application in football. 4. THE BIGGIE. HEAD TO HEAD contact. Our charging linebacker, number 55 makes THE WORST tackle ever and no one says much to him. Could be wrong…Guessing because he got the number 55 at 6 years old, and they felt it was such a shiny moment they chose to share their r 6 year old in a practice drill with the world on youtube, he is probably their pride and joy. His Dad probably played LB as a young man as well, and he's probably a coach. I could be completely wrong, but I have about a 85% chance of being right. As for the tackle. Poor form, sloppy, and dangerous, to both of them. He is high, he takes no power step, he doesn't attempt to get his arms on the runner, lift, or even finish the tackle. If I were to use such a drill, where the runner were to run through the defender, I would have it at a closer range, so both players aren't in a full sprint AND, it would be a tackling drill and in practice, you insist on good tackling. Notice in the drill the defender just put his head down and the first thing that makes contact is the front of his helmet with the other kids helmet. . A good skydiving analogy would be 1. Hit the ground 2. Pull your ripcord. It's the worst thing you can do at even at this age, they ought to be teaching the basics. The only reason 55 appears to come out on top is because he was running faster, on a stationary target, and being a little taller he was able to cannonball the other kid with his helmet. Bad form, unsafe form. All being said I would say this about mitigating factors we don’t know.1. Those coaches are volunteers. They may have been pulled into this with no prior training and they are just doing their best. They may not have a clue as to how bad this is. 2. This video may not capture what the drill was supposed to be. Maybe the kid was supposed to juke, I don’t know. If so, this is a poor representation of what they do in practice. I would have saved the good form clip for the internet, not the one where a kid gets a concussion. 3. Maybe someone did correct the tackling technique after I don;t know. , in which case, that’s the video I want to see. Then we'd get the intention of the clip. Since they only chose to show the head smack/fall down part...I'm Still guessing someone is proud of what they think was a "big hit" and this was not an educational video. 4. 4. This isn't really as dangerous as some may make it out to be right now. A 6 year old in a modern helmet has almost ZERO chance of getting a head injury with the amount of force and velocity they can produce. I can say that almost no 6 year old would get hurt in this fashion. BUT, 3 years from now when #55 does this as a big 9 or 10 year old, it becomes much more dangerous. You stop bad habits as soon as you can.
  2. Pretty big hit for there age
