its interesting that at 8:34 that u boat has a cartoon mascot painted on it, I guess we just think of the Wehrmacht of being pretty stiff and not allowing that sort of thing, and another thing about watching German combat footage, is the casual facial hair and haircuts they have.

It seems this presentation leaves out one critical thing; the british had just invented the radar which the nazis did not have and did not even know the allied had it. PBS may be playing fast and loose with the facts as it also doesnt seem likely the germans couldnt figure out a way around the allied "hacking" of their internal communications so that explanation lacks credibility. now, being seen on radar every time you approach the allies (by air and by sea) is a massacre waiting to happen, which it was indeed. in conclusion all of this exceptional work gone to watse mainly because of the invention of the Radar. another thing this presentation probably left out is that general stosskopf was a french born citizen of german decent by the sound of his name which made the nazis think of him as a german 'through and through'. it seems he bought their trust with his german bloodline...which subsequently made what he did treason rather than just espionage in the eyes of the germans. stosskopf was not just a frenchman who happened to speak german.

So, the righteous Allies couldn't destroy the sub pens so they murdered and destroyed the surrounding French towns? War Crimes anyone???? The allies would go on and murder 30,000 French civilians in Normandy in June 1944. The US were the good guys as long as they weren't murdering you.

Next week they have a documentary "The reason they didn't have enough battleships is because Hitler built u-boats instead." You can't make a documentary without blaming Hitler for everything, even if it is baseless and contradicts other documentaries you make.
As long as you realize that this video was about the u-boat pens and their construction, and not about the battle of the Atlantic or even WW2 in general, you'll be fine. It's simply another piece in the vast mosaic of the war. For instance, they glossed over the bombing of the towns surrounding the u-boat pens. This decision was painful and prolonged and taken only after the French resistance assured the allies that they were willing to endure the bombings if it meant the defeat of Germany. There was a whole movie made by the French about their railroad workers and the part they played in messing up the Germans before D-day. It was on Youtube once and may be gone now though.
You can't really call the pens indestructible when a tallboy or grandslamb bomb will cut straight into it and open it up.
