At least 91 people were killed when this tornado tore through Moore in the suburbs of Oklahoma City... Around twenty children lost their lives - 120 more people are in hospital... Many people are still trapped underneath the rubble.... There are hundreds of emergency workers and the national guard helping with the rescue effort And Barack Obama's declared it a major disaster... although that's pretty obvious from just looking at the devastation... But how does it compare to the record tornadoes in the US? The deadliest tornado on record in the US was the tri-state tornado of 1925... that killed six hundred and ninety five people in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. The deadliest ever worldwide was in Bangladesh in 1989, that killed 1,300 people. By the time it reached Moore there were winds of up to 200 miles an hour being registered... But the strongest tornado that's ever been recorded had winds of 302 miles an hour, which is thought to be the fastest wind speed recorded on earth... oddly enough, that also hit Moore during 1999... It's thought though that this one has probably done more damage... The twister was two miles across - the largest ever in the US was two and half miles across in Nebraska in 2004. This is moment the twister formed in Newcastle - about 12 miles by road from Moore...It stayed on the ground for forty five minutes - which is a very long time...The average is about 10 minutes. Some tornadoes last only a few seconds but perhaps the longest in the last 100 years was the Tri-State tornado... which is thought to have been on the ground for over three and a half hours. Before this week the tornado season had been the quietest since 1969... data from April 4, showed 155 reports of tornadoes across the country, the average for that date is 286. The most prolific tornado outbreak ever was between the 25th and 28th of April 2011 when there were 358, including 209 in a 24-hour period... there were 770 in that April alone...also a record. This year March saw the lowest number of tornadoes since 1978 - there were only seventeen But now the tornado season is roaring into life as the weather heats up after an unusually cold start to the year... May is generally the month with the most tornadoes in the US and this is the second deadly tornado in Oklahoma this week - after this one that killed two people as it ripped through a trailer park... On average the US experiences 1000 tornadoes a year... compared to Canada in second place with around 100... Weirdly, the UK has the most tornadoes relative to its land area that any other country in the world... But they're generally very weak... Tornadoes in the US are measured using the Enhanced Fujita Scale... The scale runs from EF-0 which is when there's almost no damage... right up to EF -5 It's a complicated system but boils down to the damage inflicted to human-built structures and vegetation... It's thought the Moore tornado will be recorded as an EF-4... Since 1950, when the records go back to there have only ever been 28 tornadoes reaching EF-5.
