Omaha drug bust: DEA traces meth smuggling to Sinaloa drug cartel

The US Drug Enforcement Agency busted a methamphetamine smuggling operation in Omaha on Tuesday that has it roots in Mexico and the Sinaloa drug cartel. DEA agents arrested 20 people and seized $35,000 cash and 12 lbs of methamphetamine in Omaha in a Tuesday operation after an investigation that lasted 18 months. According to a 2011 Justice Department report, on top of marijuana and cocaine, Mexican cartels have started trafficking heroin and methamphetamine, with the drugs being transported from California. Apart from Nebraska, there have been a number of meth seizures in South Dakota and Iowa in the past three years. More frequent and effective enforcement in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, has seen the cartels move their operations to the Midwest. Mexican Methamphetamine has become increasingly popular as the cartels can produce drugs with a purity of up to 90 percent at low cost.
