Playboy Erases One of the 3 Biggest Lies Men Ever Told

Hank Yuloff of www.OurMarketingGuy.com talks about Playboy getting rid of nudity in its publication. One of three biggest lies told by men – “I only read Playboy for the articles.” Is about to become true. After over 60 years, PLAYBOY announced that it was no longer going to put pictures of naked women in its magazine…. Kind of like Budweiser not putting alcohol in its beer – what’s the point of drinking that crap if you are not going to get a buzz - what’s the point of Playboy without pictures of beautiful, surgically altered and airbrushed naked women to …. Enjoy. Why are they taking away our bottomless bunnies? There must be some Marketing Manifestation, right? Yes. Money. Playboy’s rack sale (pardon the pun) circulation have dropped from 5.6 million copies a month during the 1970s to roughly 850,000 in today’s world. And with good reason, I guess. Whereas when I grew up, having a Playboy magazine (or it’s more lude counterpart, Hustler) in the drawer always had RISQUE entertainment for teenage boys – you had to be 18 to buy those magazines – now we live in a world where if I want porn, all I have to do is type whatever sexual behavior I am interested in viewing into the internet browser and it is delivered to me. Ranked by how many other people found it to be awesome. CEO of Playboy Scott Flanders agreed with me when he said “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.” The magazine will still feature a Playmate of the Month (and therefore the POTYear) but they will be rated PG-13, which probably means, no nipple. Kind of like Maxxim. How will this make them more money? The Playboy website has already been made more “safe” for younger viewers, resulting in younger readers, which gives them an increase in web traffic, where they can sell more ads. The chief content officer of the magazine, Cory Jones, said Playboy will “more accessible and more intimate.” He also said, and I agree with the first part “Twelve-year-old me is very disappointed in current me. But it’s the right thing to do.” I do have a bit of a personal worry. For the last 30 years, I have sold Playboy calendars with my client’s ads on them through our promotional products division, Promotionally Minded. I wonder if that means that they are going away soon, too. The 2016 versions are already created, so stay tuned for the 2017 editions. Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, 89, has agreed with the proposal to stop publishing images of naked women after the March 2016 edition. So get your grubby hands ready boys – it is going to be a collector’s edition.
