What you see isn’t necessarily what you get. Photoshopping happens so often it’s difficult to tell the difference between real and fake these days when it comes to what we see on social media, on television, and in magazines. Thankfully some companies have decided to stop altering their images, for example American Eagle launched an anti-photoshop campaign. Many other companies have agreed to stop photoshopping their advertisements as well. This is a move in the right direction. Changing the way people look doesn’t send out the right message for young girls, especially when we photoshop the celebrities that they admire. Altering images of celebrities creates a blown-up ideal of perfection concerning what the perfect body is suppose to look like. Some celebrities don’t mind the changes, while others are adamant about not wanting to be altered in any way. Most of the photoshop we see today isn’t obvious; people are portrayed to be ideal because their flaws are airbrushed away. But there are some pictures that are clearly and noticeably altered. Some celebrities are missing limbs, have larger breasts, or bigger muscles. Certain stars even play around with their own images, either to mock media outlets or, unfortunately, because they’re unhappy about the way they look. With all of this attention on them, they don’t want to post a picture of themselves with even the slightest imperfection, in case they are criticized for it. Photoshop created a whole new level of body image issues. There is now this strive to look perfect, when in reality no one is perfect. But apparently flaws don’t sell magazines. It’s important to remember that what we see isn’t always the truth. Celebrities are real people too, and their perfect skin and slender frames are more often than not distorted to look that way. These misrepresentations need to stop if society ever wants people to think highly of themselves again. We can’t keep comparing ourselves to the transformed images we see every day. The images seen in this video are photoshop fails, pictures that are very visibly not real. If nothing else, seeing how these celebrities really look makes us feel better about ourselves, and reminds us that stars are people too. It’s crazy to see the lengths some companies will go to in order to create the image of perfection in order to sell magazines, movie tickets, or underwear. Be wary of the unrealistic things that you see online, it’s easy to fall for glossy images and airbrushed skin, but that’s not what real looks like.
