I still don't think that it is a sane idea to have human colonists in our current form on Mars. First of all, people now want to be interconnected, we all hate lag in video games, we like instant access to things, the newest iPhones etc. Imagine if you have a human colony which is 18 minutes away in terms of communication from Earth and few months away in terms of shipping. I think especially in the beginning if you were only 200-300 people on Mars you would feel extremely lonely and even more so- due to all the safety features and having to live underground and work hard, you would feel like a prisoner in North Korean labour camp... with your bones getting weaker and weaker, and no idea how you can bear a child and how healthy the child will be developed in low G. Not to mention all the other hazards. I think Mars could be a good testbed for advanced AI, we could send there robots who could build other robots and improve on their software, build habitats for us, and we then could go there for vacation or explore Mars, but not to stay permanently. When, after a few decades or more, we can modify out bodies in a way that we could be more suited to live outside of Earth and when we can ship like 10s of thousands of people to Mars in one go to habitats prepared by robots, then we could move there if we wished.
