Study: Human Body Rejects “Biggest Loser” Weight Loss Techniques

The contestants on "The Biggest Loser” lose dozens, if not hundreds of pounds in some cases. Researchers have studied several of the contestants to learn more about the human body. What they found was pretty shocking. Ana Kasparian, Hasan Piker (Pop Trigger), and Francis Maxwell (TYT Sports), hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. "Yet their experiences, while a bitter personal disappointment, have been a gift to science. A study of Season 8’s contestants has yielded surprising new discoveries about the physiology of obesity that help explain why so many people struggle unsuccessfully to keep off the weight they lose. Kevin Hall, a scientist at a federal research center who admits to a weakness for reality TV, had the idea to follow the “Biggest Loser” contestants for six years after that victorious night. The project was the first to measure what happened to people over as long as six years after they had lost large amounts of weight with intensive dieting and exercise. The results, the researchers said, were stunning. They showed just how hard the body fights back against weight loss. “It is frightening and amazing,” said Dr. Hall, an expert on metabolism at theNational Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. “I am just blown away.” It has to do with resting metabolism, which determines how many calories a person burns when at rest. When the show began, the contestants, though hugely overweight, had normal metabolisms for their size, meaning they were burning a normal number of calories for people of their weight. When it ended, their metabolisms had slowed radically and their bodies were not burning enough calories to maintain their thinner sizes.”* Read more here: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/health/biggest-loser-weight-loss.html?utm_source=nextdraft&utm_medium=email&referer= Hosts: Ana Kasparian, Hasan Piker, Francis Maxwell Cast: Ana Kasparian, Hasan Piker, Francis Maxwell *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. 1. Give em a gastric bypass ffs
  2. When you loose a lot of weight fast by not eating enough food your body will go into starving mode. That means your body thinks you dont get enough food and it will store the calories you do eat a lot more efficiantly. This is an effect our bodies have developed after thousands of years to keep us alive in hunger periods. Its not really about how many calories you eat. Its about what you eat. Carbs is what humans are designed to eat. Rice, potatoes, corn, fruit, berries, leafy greens, veggies, that is what will keep you slim. If you want to be slim then eat according to your species diet. Idealy a high carb low fat vegan diet vith low sodium and concentratet fats and sugars.
  3. Tomato is a fruit
  4. As a weightlifting fanatic..... I really feel for the people who go on these extreme weight loss TV shows . You absolutely cannot maintain weight loss or maintain a desired size after you crash and burn your body calorie wise .
I eat what I want when I want and I'm willing to accept that I'm a little bit heavier because of it . But my body hasn't changed weight in more than 20 years . I credit that to the fact that I have never dieted a day in my life.... and there's no such thing as bad food it's all moderation .

Shows like the biggest loser are playing with peoples bodies for ratings which of course turned into dollars . Slow and steady wins the race. And even if it doesn't win the race it won't screw up your metabolism . We need to let shows like the biggest loser stop victimizing people .
  5. Keto is the solution Anna. Ask your buddy Joe Rogan.
  6. little sustainable changes works a lot better and lasts and you get less loose skin. doing it slowly let's your body change more but when yu do it quick (basicly) make your body panic and you will also pull more fat out of he foods you do eat
  7. this people are so stupid and also biggest loser lol come to my country and learn how to eat proper genuine natural food.
most cases are not biological its the crap processed food people eat.
and yeah yoy should eat carbs!!! butnot white wheat!!! carbs in fruit and vegetables.
i know the solution a natural food without sugar processed food, and trans fat, witjout fast food and red meat.
    stop being autistic american jerks.
rice, beans, water, is more costly than chips?????? right you have nrver been poor of you thnk that, go to Brazil and see what poir people eat!!! rice and beans!!!
    lol americans...
  8. Thing is if you crash diet, if you subject the body to caloric deprivation in conjunction with extreme stressors such as seven hour workouts, you basically starve the body. You subject the body to conditions which it equates with famine, and this causes permanent epigenetic changes. Some genes get turned down or off, other genes get turned on or up, and suddenly the body is flipped into hoarding mode. The bodies of people who have been subject to famine conditions have lower basal metabolic rates than those who haven't as a way of conserving food. That's unambivalent physiological fact. Crash diets offer short term weight loss at the cost of massive long term weight gain and once you've crash dieted that's you set for life.
  9. The reason these people regained weight is simply due to the fact that they had far too much of a calorie deficit and their hormones couldn't keep up with it. Some went in excess of 3500 calories a day. That's far too much for any real long term weight loss.
  10. OMG this is one of the reasons why i hate TYT. I like some of the things they do, but when it comes to science, they dont have a clue. There's a difference between a persons BMR and an increase in metabolism when exercising. Your metabolism does increase after exercise, but it doesn't last all day long. So the resting BMR was lowered because they lost weight, but this idea that the body can't increase its metabolic rate is nonsense. The reason they regain weight is easy. They are simple sugar addicts. They eat too much junk food and so they get fat. The idea that they can continue this after they finish the show is nonsense, as ad libitum diets in unhealthy food environments dont work when it comes to weight maintenance. The show doesn't help people at all. That much i agree with.
  11. I understand that the guy in the middle is upset, most of us are... No need for foul language and the preaching condescending type of talk to the viewers, it won't change much where things need to change.. Talk normally we do understand i promise
  12. Much like tabacco companies did before, large industrial food interests muddy the waters on what "healthy foods" actually are. Agricultural got control of the food pyramid early on, and it's gotten crazy since then. It takes a lot of time and effort to dig truth out of fads. That's why I'm going into dietetics. I hope to be able to help people find health. Hell, only one quarter of doctors even take a single nutrition course. Seems crazy given the most prevalent diseases in our country are all effected, if not directly caused by diet. End rant.
  13. There are MANY more ways to boost RMR than adding muscle. In fact, adding muscle may encourage weight gain. It takes concurrent training or divergent signaling in the body, especially in an obese population. My channel has a playlist on the Biggest Loser and I provide NEVER SEEN BEFORE cutting-edge strategies and explanation to the Biggest Loser Study.
  14. Not long for the world to acknowledge vegans were right all along. Whole food Plant based/Vegan diets are by far the best for our bodies!!! Best for everyone. Health, Planet and Animals!!!
  15. The Biggest Loser is a show named after its target audience, and the solution is to cancel your cable subscription. Everything on cable has turned to shit, and the few islands of worthwhile television can be found online.
  16. I never wanted to be on the Biggest Loser anyway. Now I have more reason to
  17. This is why I like British weight loss shows much better than their American counterparts. I'm talking for example "Supersize vs superskinny" or "Fat families" versus "The Biggest Loser" or "Extreme Makeover". British ones are much more focused on health aspect, losing weight slowly but steady, exercising a little more but at sustainable rate, avoiding junk food but not restrictively cutting out any food groups; and all of this in your home environment, where you have to make it work with your usual work schedule etc.

Plus, I prefer a whole lot more British shows' "esthetics". A little bit of English humor as opposed to fake emotions (SO FAKE; for me it is sometimes so unbearable, I literally can't watch it) with trainers pretending to be their fitness mentors and psychotherapists at the same time.
  18. I'm obese, people tell me all the time to eat less, when actually I have had to increase my food, which has increased my energy and I haven't yet lost weight but I eat very healthy and my body is working better, with time the weight will move, but first step was to heal my body. I was eating less than 500 calories a day up until one month ago. Everyone kept telling me not to eat so much and I would lose the weight, so I would go to the kitchen for breakfast, instead of cooking up some eggs or porridge, i just had a piece of toast and a cup of tea. I would often have a sandwich for lunch or just a cup of tea and then a stir fry for dinner. Doing this for years damaged my body, and now my body has to heal. I also got rid of my car so I have to walk everywhere years ago and it didn't help in weight loss.

That's why the fat shaming doesn't work years of damage has stopped it from working properly, so eating healthy and moving more should be the goal, and the body will work out it's own weight in it's own time in a healthy way.
  19. Hit the nail on the head TYT! I have been saying this for years about these types of show that say bigger people should lose as much weight as possible as quickly as possible. I have a degree in neuroscience and PhD in molecular biology and during my degree we learned about metabolic syndrome and obesity as a disease, insulin, leptin and ghrelin signalling in the body and in the brain (they can act differently as signals in the brain vs in receptors in the rest of the body). The research was indicating that it would take your metabolism three years to adjust to a new weight, so if you lost a lot of weight your body would be sending these signals telling you to eat, and to store fat, as it was thinking you were starving (as it would have adjusted to your higher weight as your status quo). It's therefore much more difficult to lose weight if you have been bigger for longer or have put on weight gradually over theyears. It needs to be slow and steady to have any hope of being sustainable.
