1. Nevertheless if you want to sound like James Jamerson you need to dump the 6 string Fodera (insert other fancy brand name...) and get yourself a P Bass, put flats on it and some foam muting by the bridge. You're at least half way to the TONE if not the chops!

8. well gear has something to do with it..........technique is way more important..........but a crate solid state amp will sound like crap compared to a mesa tube bass amp..............this guy just wants attention , an excuse to make a youtube video................go practice your bass and stop being annoying

13. I agree for the most part! Never a good question to ask.
    But it is worth noting that Ampeg is superior in terms of not losing the low-end sounds.

16. My first bass was and is a Cort Action I bought for 170$. It doesn't sound particularly good, but it already sounds better then it did when I first played it. I will not upgrade to a better and consequently more expensive bass until I develop myself to a level on which it would matter.
17. the only thing that matters is if your favorite bassist uses different tuning, 5/6 string bass and effect pedal

20. You will always sound like you, but you might like yourself better on an instrument that works for you. I can't buy gear to stop myself from sucking, but I certainly have gear that makes me feel more like me. I've been playing for a LOT longer than you and I recognize the wisdom of what you're saying, but good gear does help a player sound better. It won't turn a bad player into a good one, but it makes sounding your best more effortless.
    
    Gear is fun. Don't use it as an excuse but, within your means, pursue your bliss.
