The Boy With The Biggest Hands In The World

An 8-year-old boy is puzzling doctors in India, after his hands swelled to enormous proportions. Kaleem’s hands weigh 17lbs each and measure thirteen inches from his palm’s base to the end of his middle finger. The cricket enthusiast is not able to carry out most basic duties, which include tying shoelaces, and has been shunned and bullied most of his life. Kaleem’s parents, who earn just $25 a month, have been desperately attempting to find help for him, but to no avail. His 27-year-old mother Haleem said she noticed Kaleem was different at birth but was unable to help. His 45-year-old father Shamin, who works as a laborer, is troubled his son will never be self-reliant and blames himself for not generating enough income. Kaleem’s parents have only just managed to take him to a local doctor for an evaluation; however, their expectations of an immediate remedy were dashed. Dr Ratan, the manager of his local hospital, said that despite the ugly growths, the boy is in perfect health, with properly working heart and lungs. But he added that as Kaleem’s hands go on growing it might add pressure on his heart, possibly shortening his life. Somewhere else, Dr Krishna Chugh, head of pediatrics at the high-tech Forits Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, close to Delhi, was also left puzzled after going over video and photos. But he believes Kaleem might be affected by either hamartoma or lymphangioma, which are both, treatable. Lymphangioma is a rare condition that affects the lymphatic system that leads to extreme swelling in doughy masses growing in various sections of the body. Hamartoma is a benign kind of tumor where the human body releases excessive tissue. After hearing from medics, Keleem’s parents renewed a positive outlook that something can be achieved for their son.
