  3. I grew up in Memphis TN in the late 40s on through the 50s and my dad had practically all of these songs on the old 78 vinyl. We had one of those floor model television/radio/record player combination and I remember it had a special place to hold the records. My dad's favorites were The Pilgrim Travelers, The Spirit of Memphis and Mahalia Jackson. My brother and I were not allowed to put any music on that player if it wasn't gospel and when we started listening to WDIA we heard some great gospel and also some great soulful blues, which we couldn't listen to when our parents were home. All of my immediate family members are gone now but I'll always treasure those precious memories of growing up on Kansas Street so long ago.

  20. I so agree with Yolanda Davis, the newer grown folks from 40-49yr olds don't appreciate this music. I've run across ministers of music who don't want to teach this music and its our history. it saddens me so.
